After extractions
 

My 4 year old Yorkie had 2 baby canine extracted 2 days ago and also his teeth cleaned.. Now my problem is, his not taking the pain killers the vet prescribed him with, we've tried everything possible to administer it to him. I know his in pain as his restless I still haven't seen him sleep yet! He just won't let us near his mouth to give it to him. I'm wondering how long the pain usually lasts after extractions. His eating fine.

Awww...poor little guy. I hope he feels better soon. Just like people, I think dogs have different pain thresholds and how they handle it is dog dependent. We've had two with dentals in the past six months. Our older poodle had several teeth extracted this summer and seemed miserable for at least a week or more. He slobbered and drooled for a few days and hid out in his crate most of the time for at least a week and we had to coax him to eat and practically hand feed him. Our 2 year old rescue boy was neutered, had a cleaning and two molars extracted about a month ago and barely missed a beat. His procedure was on Friday and he seemed almost back to normal the next day. Vet said to make sure he got the pain meds at least through Monday but he didn't even seem like he needed them on Sunday.


For both, I wrapped the pain meds in a little coating of Baby Belle cheese, which is very soft, and they took them without a problem. We had the pain meds in pill form for both of them though. I think we'd have had a difficult time getting a liquid pain med into our older guy because he wouldn't let us near his mouth either. If your dog is in so much pain that he can't even sleep, a trip back to the vet might be needed. Ours both came home from the procedure and slept most of the time until the next day, then were back to normal sleep cycles. If your baby isn't sleeping, you probably aren't getting much either. I know how that goes!

All pill meds I stuff in a Greenie pill pocket, no problem getting them to take meds. they love the pill pockets.

How have you tried giving it to him? I give pills either in their food, in peanut butter, or in cheese...

Wylie's Mom, iv tried giving it to him in food aswell like ham he loves ham, so iv tried giving him ham alone and he doesnt even want it dont know if he feels like im gonna trick him with it after or why his not taking it as his having his normal food just fine.
Iv tried giving him peanut butter while pretending to eat it my self to see if he will accustom to it but his just really not having it :(

Vet said to come back on Monday if i cant get him to have it so she can give me the liquid version of the painkiller but problem is he will not open his mouth he clenches his teeth together and ofcourse im not gonna be forceful not to hurt him. :(

He seems ok and happy, but whats worrying me is that his quite restless always moving from one place to another and not actually resting his self like he usualy does or maybe im over analyzing as i know he is probably in pain.

Just hope his pain wears off soon as his naughty ass in not taking the tablets:(

Hmmm...do the pain meds have a strong odor? Maybe he can smell them and that's why he's refusing? If he's eating a normal amount of his regular food, I'd think he's not in unbearable pain from his mouth. Is there something else that could be bothering him and making him uncomfortable and restless? Maybe the vet could give him a pain injection tomorrow so you could see if that changes his demeanor?


I know that my one little older guy is very emotionally sensitive. After his dental last summer when he had several teeth removed, he mostly hid in his crate for at least a week. I'm sure his mouth was sore, but I don't really think that was the cause of his hiding and personality change. I think he was just confused and miffed that I had the audacity to drop him at the vet, and he didn't understand why he had the pain. I was thinking back, and our third dog, a young poodle, had a dental a little over a year ago. She was spayed at the same time, and our vet is fanatical about removing those back molars at the time of the spay or neuter. She says they generally cause problems later and its easier to take them out before their roots are firmly planted. Anyway, she was a rescue too and about 8 or 9 months old at the time of the procedure. She barely missed a beat and was back to normal within a day or two as well, after having four teeth removed and an abdominal surgery (spay). I know the younger they are, the faster they bounce back, but also both of our other two were rescues and new to our family, so they didn't have the emotional attachment to feel betrayed. LOL

When Remy was neutered and had 4 baby teeth pulled a few months ago our vet gave me syringes with the liquid pain meds already measured out for him. I think I only ended up giving him a couple of doses because he was running around, eating and playing as if nothing was done. Every animal is different and he may not be in as much pain as we think they should be especially since he is eating fine.

I think if he's eating then he prob isn't in too much pain. I'm sure they have a good tolerance and if they are baby teeth they are designed to come out. My boy is 13 and he had 7 teeth extracted. They were rotten and easily came out but he was just fine without meds and healed wonderfully. He did have to have antibiotics and I found the soft treats, I used milo's kitchen steak grillers, worked well prob bc they have a very strong smell and taste. I would break it in pieces and then put the pill inbetween the pieces. I guess since he wasn't really chewing he swallowed it whole. Worked good in cheese too.

My Tatiana does not like to take pills either.

I grind up her pills with a mortar and pestle until it's powdered. Then I mix the powder with a morsel of canned food. I would offer the morsel to her, and she would eat it right up. The morsel of food is small - size of an M&M candy.

This is the only way I could get Tatiana to take her pill medications.

This is exactly how I give pills :) Works like a charm!!

I know this thread is from mid December but I wanted to share the only thing that works for ours. They don't like pill pockets or peanut butter. I tried every kind of soft cheese and they won't eat it. If I put it in meat, they chew into the pill and spit it out.

I put Daisy's pill in cream cheese and give her a couple of tiny licks from my finger with no pill. Then I give her the pill inside the cream cheese. She swallows without even knowing about the pill. Daisy has to take a huge capsule every day and it slides right down like it is nothing. I just hope this keeps working. I'm not crazy about giving her cream cheese but if I could come up with anything else that worked I would love to try it. I think I will try the a Baby Belle cheese though if I can get enough of it around this big capsule.

Instructions on her pill says not to cut it or grind it. I think it must be bitter or something.

My Gidget hates pills too. My vet suggested layering it between to dabs of SUPACAL as its thicker than Nuratical. She'll take it every time. Also it helps pill to slide down easier. Hope all your babies doing good.

I've been putting inside a piece of green bean (from the can) working for me! (don't let him see it while your doing it)! Keep us posted!

If Bentley will not take a pill, I open his mouth with my left hand and with the other I put the pill between thumb and forefinger. I put it far back of his throat and then shut his mouth and gently rub the front of his neck until I know he has swallowed. I have done it this way with all my dogs if they keep spitting it up.
