My baby ate fat trimmings!!!! My yorkie accidentally ate two small peices of fat trimmings from a steak. She is one yr. old and weighs about 3 lbs. I am panicking because I have read that these can be extremely toxic. She is acting normal as of now but what should I look for? When do I know if I am in the clear?! Any help would be great!!! |
Watch for vomiting and/or diarrhea. Fat can be deadly as I can attest to after losing my Gina because my husband gave her beef brisket with fat. Also, watch for blood in her poop. |
Is there any chance it won't affect her? Or is she doomed?! |
No, she is not doomed. Just watch her carefully. One of the members dog ate a slice of pizza and was just fine. It all depends on the dog. More than likely she will be just fine. |
Ok I am really hoping so. Thank you for the quick response, I am really scared. How soon/late can she show symptoms? Is there a time (hours, days) when she should be in the clear if no symptoms show? |
Thank you so much for the quick response. I am so scared. Is there a time scale for when she will show symptoms? Immeadiate, hours, days? If now symptoms appear how do I know when she is in the clear? Hours, days?? |
I meant if no symptoms |
I would give your vet a call tomorrow and ask them. I'm no expert. I speak only from a terrible experience with my little girl. |
hope she is okay |
Thank you. As of now, she is acting perfectly normal. Eating a drinking fine, energy level consistent with Her normal self. No vomit or diarrhea yet. I'm praying that other than some soft stool and maybe a tummy ache she has no major health issues from this. I feel awful that this even happened. |
She'll probably be just fine. Look for lethargy or of course any other sign that she's sick. The fat is an issue because it can cause pancreatitis. She however will probably be just fine, so keep a good eye on her and don't worry too much. :) |
dog Yorkies seem to be sensitive to certain foods. I gave Spud chicken from the Costco chicken I bought and he has vomited and had loose stool. Had him to the vet. Only very plain chicken , no spicy stuff. I learned and hope he gets better. Hoping and praying your sweet Yorkie will be well too. |
I'm just wondering if she's ok and it didn't bother her or if her body hasn't digested it yet. She ate it around 6pm and it's almost 10pm now. Would she be showing any symptoms yet? |

I would breathe easier after 24 hours, and then 48 hours. As posted above, watch her closely for any signs of discomfort. If she has any at all, head straight to the vet. Keep us posted. |

As of Sat. Nov.29 Cody has been banned from the kitchen when I am preparing food. First of all he is always in between my legs when I am zippy around the kitchen pulling this and that out of the frig. Secondly he is always waiting for something to drop so he can snatch it up. Sat. for lunch I was dieing for hot dogs, I pulled out the George Foreman grill opened the hot dog bun bag and took out one bun and laid it on the counter. IDK maybe the bun was close to the edge of the counter. Cody decides HE NEEDS TO POTTY like NOW. So I go 10 feet to the back door to let him out, open the door, no Cody. Cody where are you, I look in the kitchen to see where is he since he made this big fuss about needing to go potty, what I see is the hot dog bun sticking out of his mouth, I run and telling him to DROP IT while prying open his mouth. Cody is adopted one year now, he has never done something like this forme to use the drop it command, does he know what the command means? His prev. owner taught him several basic commands that I discovered over the months I have had him. The DROP IT command didn't work well, I managed to get part of the bun that was hanging out of his mouth as his jaw was locked, and no amount of forcing his jaws open worked, so I backed off, when I saw him relax his jaws I tried again, no success. He was trying to get 3/4 of that bun down really fast, I thought OMG, he's gonna choke to death if that DRY bun gets stuck in his throat. Again I am trying to PRY open his jaws, not working so now I am watching to make sure he doesn't choke on his determination to eat that bun. Thank god he was ok. After that episode he was banned from the kitchen. My concern is onions, when I do cook I used a lot of onions and am always careful when I am chopping them because he is always right there waiting for something to hit the floor, so I work slower and very careful. Now that I see he will not release what's in his mouth he is banned for LIFE from the kitchen when I cook. Maybe you should do the same so accidents like what you are going through does not happen again. A hot dog bun will not kill a dog, but onions and other foods are very toxic to dogs. I will not take a chance after what I went through trying to prevent Cody from eating this bun,as hard as it is to scold him and ban him it is for the safety of his life. I hope your baby is ok, please keep us posted. |
