Need Help Please
 

Hello all,

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I recently purchased a Yorkie in May from the same breeder that I got his brother from. Long story short, I took him to the vet to get neutered and his liver enzymes were very high and the vet would not do the surgery as he said it was too risky. I immediately reached out to the [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]breeder[/COLOR][/COLOR] to let her know as there were two other pups in the litter (my cousin purchased one of them). She called her vet, who based on the test results, diagnosed a liver shunt. The breeder seemed genuinely concerned and offered to refund my purchase price for the puppy and that if she took him back, she would probably put him down because she can't afford the surgery. I can't afford the surgery and based off what her vet says, it will be a lifetime of special [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]diet [COLOR=green !important]food[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR], IF the surgery works.

I even told her I would reach out to some [COLOR=green !important][COLOR=green !important]rescue [COLOR=green !important]groups[/COLOR][/COLOR][/COLOR] to see if they could assist with the surgery and that maybe we can split the cost of surgery if she took him back. This was over a month ago and I have called/emailed/texted her with no response. The last time we spoke she said that her vet maybe be able to find someone to help with the surgery.

At this point, I am getting a little frustrated. I have been super patient and really believed that she was trustworthy. Does anyone know if there is some kind of recourse I can take? Or if there is a rescue group that would help with the cost of surgery?

Do you have a written purchase agreement and a written health guarantee from the breeder. They are standard documents furnished at the time of sale, along with the AKC papers.

The purchase agreement and health guarantee usually spell out the responsibilities of each party in the event of health issues. You may also have additional rights under your State's laws.

You will also need/should look at Puppy Lemon Laws for your State. Initially your breeder offered to refund you the purchase price of the puppy, which would be what I would offer as well. Look to your contract of sales and your health warranty to see what is set out there.


But it looks like, neither you nor she seem to be able to afford the surgery; you can look at Care Credit to see what you qualify for.


Beyond that, you can contact some rescues Yorkie Haven Rescue is one such rescue, but you will need to surrender your dog to them.

Has your boy been exhibiting any of the signs of Liver Shunt? Do you now have him on a special diet, along with medications to help his condition? Although I will say a high BATS is often indicative of Liver Shunt, there are other tests that need to be done to confirm same.


Just act quickly to explore your financial options, and in the meantime do not let your boy suffer!


I am very sorry you and your boy find yourself in this position. Your story and countless others like it, really highlight the need to put in place financial options in case of medical conditions, pet insurance is one such option.
