Yorkie with Liver Problems I have very unfortunate news today.... My Choco (6 years and 7 months old right now) has liver problems. We took him to the vet today and he had blood work now and they told us he definitely has a liver disease/liver problems. They told us it was most likely liver shunt or gallbladder. They are going to do an ultrasound on Thursday for a final diagnosis for Choco, but I am just trying to find options for him before hand. Worst case scenario is surgery and we definitely cannot afford this at all. I have signed up for CareCredit and was not approved for much at all. We do not have any insurance for Choco. I was researching online, and I am very sad to say, but maybe we would have to find a rescue for Choco who can take him and afford the surgery as well. Does anyone here know any place that can help????? We are located in Long Beach, CA |
Our 11 year old was just diagnosed with elevated liver enzymes and we were preparing for the worst. After the ultrasound, the problem was not nearly as bad as it could have been. She is on med for her liver and after 30 days it is nearly back to normal. She will still need periodic blood tests done. I hope you get news as good as we got after the untrasound. Your story breaks my heart. I pray that things work out for you and your sweet boy won't need surgery. |
First I want to say how sorry I am for you I know your heart is breaking. I'm also so sorry for your pup that he is ill, liver shunt is quite serious. I also want to point out how selfless and wonderful your act of love really is, it can not be easy to make this decision and reaching out to the "outside" for help so that your pup has been afforded every possible chance of survival is incredibly humane and kind, you must love Choco very much. I'm sure there will be folks around to link you with the information you need. Please be patient and tenacious in checking this thread. I wish your pup much luck as he fights this illness and I hope that you are able to accept that you are doing the RIGHT thing for this baby, your doing EVERYTHING right. |
I hope that you get the help you need. I am glad you are asking for help. . It is the most selfless thing you can do for your pup . .good luck |
I am so sorry your Choco is ill. Yes, you are amazing for considering rescue ... putting him first. I would suggest that, while you can look around, you hold out a bit because you don't have a diagnosis yet and perhaps it can be a manageable thing. What is happening that they believe this may be a shunt? Does he have symptoms? What tests have been done? There are things that can happen with the liver that are perfectly manageable. There are rescues that you can reach out to, but I encourage you to first find out what is going on with him! (if you can afford to do that). There are groups that can help Choco, but let's see if maybe you don't need to do that first! :) I will keep you and him in my thoughts and prayers. Feel free to message me if you need to talk. :) |
Have they put Choco on a special diet and/or any meds?? |

They did bloodtest, X-ray, and Ultrasound. On top of the liver issues, he has pancreatitis. Which the vet said it needs to be treated right away :(. He prescribed Baytril, S-Adenosyl, and Famotidine. They recommended for him to stay in the hospital for a couple more days to begin treating it with stronger meds but I cannot afford anymore days. Choco is a very picky eater and I don't know what I should feed him to make him eat. I do have some chicken breast, I can cook and mix with rice. I'm hoping he eats. |
Any ideas to get Choco to eat? We've been forcing his medications down his throat, but we need him to eat the food too. I've searched online, and found diets for pancreatic dogs. I'm boiling chicken breasts and rice, but he's not eating anything at all. How can I get him to eat? |

I do not know anything about your pups illness but if I were you I'd send a private message to LadyJane. I know her and she will help you with anything that she possibly can and send you in the right direction. There are others here that can give you good advise as well. I really hope your pup is eating by now!! |
I have a little good news. First night not in hospital, he is now at home and we boiled some chicken breast, and he was eating!! I am thinking this is very good news, compared to before the hospital visit, Choco was not eating at all. I will keep you posted, and keep updating on Choco's status. Thank you all for your support!! |

I am sorry I didn't see this until now. Ask your vet about giving an appetite stimulant. There are two : Mirtazapine is commonly used. I cannot think of the other one offhand but your vet should know. I could look it up if you try Mirtazapine and it does not work. Pancreatitis can be deadly. Keep a very close eye on him. While it is best to be hospitalized, you could also ask about getting subcutaneous fluids. ANY change in his condition needs immediate vet care. Prayers for your Choco....please keep us updated. |

Thought I'd update on Choco: For right now Choco is eating. I know he is very weak right now but I see him putting effort in eating and drinking. I know this is a very slow progress, but we are keeping an eye on him all day, and paying great attention to Choco. |
Choco condition was slightly improving but has turned to the worst last night, as he had a panic attack because of his pancreas. He was not moving, one eye was dialated but the other was not, I could hear his heart beating and a faint breathing. I rushed him to the emergency vet and he recovered slightly, where he is moving and looking around. I am financially drained and have done everything I can do get my Choco better. But, I am frightful that if the panic attacks happen again he will not make it. I emailed a Yorkie rescue group here in LA to hopefully take him in and care for him to recover, and find him a home that loves him as much as I do. I did call the SPCALA but they would euthanize him and I want to avoid this situation but also I don't want to sit and watch him suffer in pain. Please if you know anyone or organization that can take him in and care for him. Let me know. Thank you for all your support throughout my years of being part of this forum. |

I am so sorry sending prayers for Choco and for you. |
dog I will pray for little Choco. I am so sorry you must go through this. My Spud is sick now too. Vomiting, went to the vet, on meds. He is 10yrs. It is so hard to watch your sweet Yorkie sick. I hope someone will just cover his medical expenses and let you keep him. He loves you and that would be so sad to have to give him up. You are such a wonderful dog loving person. Prayers are always answered so I will pray hard for this situation to turn around and blessings come down. |
Thank you all for your great support. I am very sad I had to make a decision but we decided to euthanize my Choco this afternoon. I took him to the Vet where he was hospitalized and there was a very little chance he would get better, and he was in great pain. During my drive to the vet, Choco again was not responding but managed to get him awake. It was a very hard decision for me and I cannot stand to see him in pain, i know he got himself awake for me but he was going in and out. I did try my best and called rescue groups and also emailed Yorkie rescue of America. But, after consultation with my vet and also the doctor at the vet hospital, It was very painful for Choco to survive each day. I requested Choco to be cremated and will be making a place for him along side my Grandmas Altar at home. Thank you for all your kind advice and I will definitely stay in this forum and help others that is going through what my Choco had gone through. |

I am so sorry you had to make the ultimate sacrifice and do what was best for Choco even though I know it broke your heart. He is running free with all the other yorkies and dogs and is waiting for you. My deepest condolences to you. God bless the newest Yorkie Angel Choco. |
