Abdominal surgery friday  my baby is having abdominal surgery Friday for undescended testicle, after two vets assessing him the decision is for abdominal operation and also he is having one baby retained tooth extracted. I'm really worried about handing my baby over but I know it is important in the long run for his health. I would be grateful of any advice about having things ready for him when I bring him home. I just want to have everything ready for him to be comfortable. |
Your baby will be in my thoughts and prayers for all to go smoothly on Friday. Handing them over to the vet isn't easy. I cry every time. For post op: make sure the vet gives you a pain medication to give him at home. You will likely need an e-collar (cone) to keep him from licking his incision. An xpen or crate is helpful to keep him from being active when you can't supervise. The vet should also give you post-op instructions for care/restrictions on activity. |
Abdominal surgery is major surgery and is painful, so make sure you come home w/ pain meds AND with a "pain plan" if/when those meds aren't effective (ie, does vet then recommend 1.5 doses of pain med or..?). Pain control is most important -- and DO give it even if he doesn't seem to be in pain...and give it on time or you won't stay ahead of the pain. Your kiddo will do just GREAT - you'll be amazed how fast he snaps back. The first night can be rough as the anesthesia is still wearing off, so he may just want to sleep, and that's okay. You may or may not need a cone...some dogs leave stuff alone and others don't. You could also try a onesie in place of a cone. Keep us posted on how he does, we'd love an update! :) |
Hoping your pup is well, please keep us posted:) |

I am very happy to hear that all went well and that Roman is home, recuperating nicely. Glad the big day is over for both of you! |
