Need help giving my little guy eye drops. Any ideas on the best way to get some drops in my little guys eyes? At the vet the vet just put them in, no problem. Now that we're home the job seems impossible. Any tips? Thank you. |
If he fights you, wrap him very securely in a towel with only his head exposed, tuck him under one arm or place him in your lap and dispense the drops confidently and quickly, taking care you don't touch his eye with the dropper. Then a big praise/cuddling session, nice treat and a quick run outside or play session will help bleed out his tension from the encounter. |
I sometimes hold their topknot or chin hairs to get them to be stable. Joey had to have eye drops and it was much easier than ear drops for Ralphie, we had to do the towel method for him. |
Like Nancy, I held Max's beard to steady his head. Lots of treats, praise, and loving afterward. Be confident and your baby will likely be less anxious about it. Max got to the point where he would just lean his head back for me. Best wishes for your little guy. |

Mylittle Majic will come for his eye care...been doing it since he was 3 months old....I sit on the bed and he comes to my right side, between me and my pillow. I pull his head up onto my pillow, open his left eye with my left hane, and drop the med into his left eye....I turn him around and do the same for his right eye....he is sandwiched securely between my lleg and my pillow, and if necessary, I can secure his head on my pillow with gentle pressure. Afterwards, like everyone says, lots and lots of kisses and clapping and excited jubulent celebrating! He LOVES the praise and runs and bounces all around my bed with excitement and joy!! We do this 3 times a day, for the last 8 years, and will continue for life. |

I like all advise given so far. I have another one for you, if you have never given yourself eyedrops do so now. Get a saline wash for contacts and practise on your own eyes. That will also give you confidence. I too give treats afterwards, and a couple of warm pets. In fact all my dogs will line up to get eye drops = treats:) |
Thanks for all the help. I started by putting his leash on as he knows he's not supposed to struggle against the leash and that helped. Then I wrapped him in a towel and after a lot of struggling I got the drops in. I think what helped the most was to go after him with confidence. Of course I followed up with some treats and a lot of love. He's resting now, but it all starts again tonight. :-( I hope this gets easier but I really have to thank all for the tips. BTW, ear drops are easy. I just sneak up on him while he's sleeping. :-) |

I have found it to be easier if I approach from behind rather than coming at them with that little bottle that seems to intimidate. I hold them and love on them. Then, I steady my right hand on the top of the head and put the drops in the eye. My left hand is under the chin holding them still. Usually works well. |
