Blood loss 1 Attachment(s) While at work, my 7 month old puppy who weighs 2lbs has chewed/licked his paw until it bled-bad! By the time I got home, it had stopped bleeding but there was blood all over carpet. I washed the wound and wrapped it in gauze/tape. He has eaten and drank water since the incident but he's very tired/lethargic and only wants to sleep. I called vet and they said since he's no longer bleeding that he is okay and can just come in tomorrow. Is this normal since there was blood loss? I just want to make sure I shouldn't bring him into emergency tonight. Or if it's even worth going to vet tomorrow. I've attached an image to show how much blood he's lost. Again he only weighs two pounds! I'm a concerned mom! Also, what could cause paw chewing? It is only his back left paw he's focused on. P.S It's only a tiny spot that looks like the paw is skinned. I don't know how it bled so much. |
Your poor baby! Are you absolutely sure the blood came from his paw? This is a tough judgment call that only you can make. I would be inclined to go to the ER tonight. If not tonight, I would definitely have the vet look at his paw tomorrow. Make sure the bandage isn't too tight on his paw, so that it isn't cutting off circulation. |
VET for this little one. |
I've read your other posts/threads....is this the same pup with hydrocephalus, bad stools etc? I'm concerned for this pup please have him checked out, please. |
Volume of blood loss is difficult to estimate when it is on absorbant material....if it was on a tile floor, you could better guestimate how much blood was actually lost. The thing that would concern me would be lethargic behavior. If it was me, check hs gums for paleness, also if he is shivering....lethargy and pale gums would send me to the vet tonight, for lab work...they can check his Hb and Hct (Hemaglobin and hematocrit) which will give you blood count and let you know if he is anemic. I would check lab work tonight, simply because I know me and I would be awake all night worrying about ny pup. I would rather get a diagnosis and go from there. |
Thanks everyone for the responses. Jameson no longer has loose mucus stools. That was corrected by probiotics and hasnt had a problem since. He does have a mild case of hydrocephalus due to an open fontanelle but I don't believe that has anything to do with paw chewing. His gums are pink and normal looking, he does not seem to be cold or shivering. His eating and drinking are normal. He just seems very tired. But I will definitely get him checked out. |
Paws are very vascular and can really bleed. If he is/was focused on just ONE paw, then there is something wrong w/ that paw - perhaps he broke a claw or it split, or one of the pads is injured, or there is a foreign object...in any case, the paw needs to be looked at asap. |
Did you get this baby vetted yet? Wondering about his blood count......? Was the lethargy due to anemia? |
sounds like a bacterial infection. Jess had one and was digging at her paw. Antibiotic shot cleared it right up |
