Yorkie ate macadamia nut advice for others.
 
I do not post here often but wanted to voice my experience for others if one encounters the same situation. Our Yorkie ate half a macadamia nut a few days ago. As you know, they are toxic to dogs especially our little Yorkies. We just took him to the vet for another problem a week prior and paid quite a bit of money. So we read online and decided to watch him closely instead of dragging him to the vet again for x-rays, etc. The same night, he did vomit twice. But he seemed ok (no paralysis of hind legs, no lethargy, etc). The very next day, he seemed ok and went through the day just fine. 72 hours later, I let him outside to do his business and he ran about as usual but stopped several times as if he was just trying to vomit again. After several attempts, he vomited a yellowish liquid and out came the nut! This is after he ate twice over the course of 72 hours too! It's mind-boggling how this toxic nut does not digest in their tummies. So for those who encounter the same problem, hopefully your doggie will recover and I want to save some people the grief and possible vet bill and for you not to panic. Hopefully, my post will help others.

I am so glad I did not read that your dog passed away from that nut. You are so fortunate that the nut came up and your precious Yorkie is ok. These little rascals get into stuff and we have to be so careful. I am happy your dog is fine. Thanks for the reminder of the seriousness of the nut.

I am so happy you were fortunate and your pup is doing well....my neighbor's yorkie ate one and the story did not end as well for him....I would just warn people to be aware of the effects these highly toxic nuts can have on our babies and respond accordingly......I PERSONALLY always err on the side of caution, as I am a firm beliver in crisis avoidance rather than crisis management.

I'm glad your dog had a good outcome. Personally, I will always panic and take my dogs to the vet, and do whatever it takes to pay the bill. I would rather not gamble and risk a broken heart.

That was a real risk that you took by not taking your dog to the vet after eating a known toxin. I'm glad that he is now well and your gamble paid off. But I do not think it is wise to offer this advice to other members since your story could have ended badly.

You're very lucky he swallowed the nut instead of chewing it. If he had chewed it the outcome probably would have been very different.

Thank you for all your responses. And yes, I thought about that as well... luckily he swallowed half the nut and did not chew it as it came out in whole. We need to remind ourselves each and every day to watch our little ones like hawks. What do vets do in these situations...induce vomiting or go in and operate to remove the piece?

And my little one adores peanut butter and almond butter. Is it ok to give this in small amounts every few days when I'm eating it as well or better to avoid the almond butter?

The choice between inducing vomiting and surgical removal I believe would depend on a number of factors, including the size of the nut, size of the dog, whether or not the nut was chewed, how long it is in the system. There are other treatments required for the ingestion of toxic substances.

I would skip the almond butter and stick to peanut butter (in limited amounts).
