Tail too short? Or hemmroid? 1 Attachment(s) So I just got this 7 1/2 week old girl (yes I know too young, but it was from the infamous Lynn hardacker, we found out too late). Anyway she's been pooing just fine and this morning the poor baby strained and Reyes for a bout 5 min. Remembering that sometimes the fur can cause problems I checked and washed her bum with warm water removing the blockage. It seemed that her tail was docked too short! And to top it off she now has a bulge on her anus! She's being fed canned blue buffalo puppy. (A HUUGE improvement from Lynn giving her canned ol Roy!!! 😡😡 So she went poo after that and I'm sure it was uncomfortable because she them drug her booty on the pee pad. I gave her bottom another warm rinse to get her clean. And she went back to bed, exhausted I'm sure. Anyway, please look at the pics and tell me opinions on the tail and the bulge please! Thanks I have a few more pics but it was a hassle to reduce the picture size |
It could be just an irritation of the area that will clear up soon, or it could be something that may need to be seen by a vet, it's hard to say. I would put one of the following on the area: diaper rash cream, hydrocortisone cream, or hemorrhoid cream...it may clear it right up and will give some relief in the meantime. If it still looks bad on Monday, I'd get her in to the vet. |
Yeah, I agree with Ann, and it's always a good idea to do a vet check after you pick up a new puppy. I imagine he'll want to start the shots. I can't believe that this breeder cut her tail like that, it's because of breeders like that, that many countries have banned docking. Best of luck, and please give us an update. |
She just had a vet check yesterday and has started on her shots Thursday. Thanks for the advice. So am I right about the tail being too short? |

Im not sure on the length of the tail....my boss had a book that showed the standard for each breed but i no longer had access to it :-( however Winnie had the same problem with her rear end when she came home. She went for her well check the day after I brought her home, she had diarrhea / soft stool since I had her and the vet said she believed her bottom was protruding from straining to go poo. She also used to wipe her bottom on the ground after she went...but she had no worms. I think it's just irritation personally from the diarrhea....and it did stop protruding after about a week of her being home. She has had diarrhea and soft poo since she came home and I was worried it was the BB but her vet said to give her a little more time on it before switching....but right now the vet has her on i/d , fortiflora powder (probiotic) and antibiotics to clear her up from her shroom trip and then I will be introducing a new food. As of right now she's having the most normal BM's I have seen from her in almost 7 weeks. |
I don't know about Yorkies, but did my Dobies, there was a standard you had to count the vertebra and cut between. I've heard many methods for breeders with Yorkies, but to me Ginger looks good with the cut length she has about 2" and will be about 8 lbs |
Could be an impacted anal gland |

I looked at a ton of pictures of obstructed anal glands on google and none of them look like her issue. In those pictures the obstructed glands are located at the 8 and4 o'clock BENEATH the actual anus. So I'm feeling pretty good it's probably just irritation due to the straining. I applied hemaroid cream as suggested and will monitor for any change. I'll take another look at the tail after that's all healed. My poor sweetie...:( |
That poor puppy... It\'s sad when they strain to poo :( I would take her to the vet on Monday if there isn\'t any improvement. |
I would have the vet check it out. Any shots before 8 weeks are pretty much useless. |
Most often, unless there is a chance the baby may become a show dog in which case the tail is not cut as short, usually the tail is docked at the point where the brown hair on the underneath of the tail, meets the black hair on the underneath of the tail. That ensures the tail will be a good length as the baby grown and the pup matures. |
Oh poor baby, that looks sore. Please let us know how she makes out. Congratulations on your new little one! |
