New to forum, questions and concerns Hello, I am a brand new to the forum and an excited mommy to a new yorkie puppy, Duke. Duke is nine weeks old. We had a tough ride home, he threw up twice and two more times at the pet store. I don't know if I should be concerned, but before we left the place that we purchased Duke, he was given a shot and a big glob of Nutri-Cal oral gel. We were told to give him the Nutri-Cal later on tonight also. Right now we got him home and left him in the crate as he sleeps. We bought soft food to mix with kibble that the store was giving him. We have not feed him yet just letting him sleep off what ever he has. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.. |
If you bought him from a pet store you need to get a vet check ASAP. I have heard a lot of puppies coming from pet stores normally are sick with at the least kennel cough. Many pet stores will give there puppies stuff to mask this until some one buys them. Pet store puppies come from puppy mills and are exposed to a lot so he could be sick, he could have just gotten car sick, or he could have something very serious. You also need to make sure he is not experiencing hypoglycemia because if he is he could start to have seizures which could end up leading to death. Do you know what the shot was? He could also be having a reaction to that as well. Is he responsive? |
Feed him! If all he's had is nutri-cal, and has vomited, his belly is empty. When was he last fed? I assume it's been well over a few hours. At such a young age, he needs to eat every 4-6 hours. He could go hypoglycemic without regular intervals of food. |
Lasted update: he ate and drank a good amount of water. Shortly after he ate he went to the bathroom. Hasn't thrown up since the car ride home. He appears to be pretty content with relaxing and taking little snoozes. |

I've been researching Vets since I got home. Thanks so much for all of your help. |
Welcome to YT! We have some members in your area....I am sure they will be along to recommend some vets! :) You definitely should have your puppy checked out as soon as possible! |
Hi welcome to YT. I PM'd you! |
Hi & welcome to you & Duke. I agree, he needs to be checked out by a vet asap. |
Thank you everyone. Duke and I just left the vet., she was wonderful. His heart and lungs sounded well, but due to his cough progressively getting worse, he was prescribed antibiotics and a cough suppressant when needed. He got cat sick on the way here; I hope as he gets older he won't continue to have to motion sickness. Any suggestions ? |
new pup Sorry to hear your new baby is not feeling well and also gets car sick. Perhaps it is because he is ill with a cough or still anxious from his environment change? Was the pup definitely diagnosed with kennel cough? If so did you tell the pet store/seller, and will they cover any vet bills to treat this. Do you have any health guarantee for this pup should he get any other ailment? These pet store pups nearly always come from puppy mills and are not always in the best of health. Hope he gets well soon and that he travels better in the car soon. |
My little one gets car sick so I don't feed him for 3 hours before he goes out. I bought him a car seat that sits high up so he can see out the window and that has helped him. He use to get car sick everytime now only on real long rides. Good luck. I bought a dog at a pet store and he was the healthiest dog I ever owned. He lived to be 16 and I had to put him down because he had doggie dementia and didnt know us any more. |

Intilis. I did get very lucky. That doesn't usually happen. He was the only one I ever got at a pet store. I got my new puppy from a breeder so let's see how that goes!! |

My Ripley got car sick when we picked her up from the breeders at 14 weeks. Sometimes she still does it and she will be 1 year next month. We are actually going on a trip to the beach this weekend and got some meds for nausea this time. Hoping that will help her. Hopefully your little one will get over her cough soon. Make sure she eats regularly. Shes young and you don't want her to develop hypoglycemia. |
Thanks Intilis, you are right. The luck of the draw. None of us know what will become of us through the years. All you can do is hope for the best!! |
