HELP!! Don't know whats wrong with my teacup yorkie!!! :( My yorkie is one years old and two days ago started having diarrhea and was vomiting. She has vomited a total of three times in the past five days. Each a yellow color and had full chunks of chicken in it. She had diarrhea along with the vomiting. For the first few days it was normal stool colored but very watery..one day there were traces of blood. I took her to the vet, they gave me two medications both liquid which I gave her. She was fine for a day but this morning she woke me up at 6:40 AM (Which never happens, she can sleep for hours and hours) vomiting. I took her outside and she had diarrhea. It didn't even look like diarrhea..it was 99% mucus. I have never seen this before!!! She is eating normally...which is what is confusing. However, she's been sleeping all day and when she got up to eat she seemed a little wobbly. :\ Anyone know what it could be?! I feel so bad for her and don't know how to help :( |
You might want to check back with your vet. I hope she is ok. |
There are many things it could be and none of us are vets to determine what it is it would just be speculation. With diahrea and vomiting both a vet visit is needed |
She could be hypoglycemic or in liver failure or just feeling weak from losing fluids or whatever - a professional needs to see her. I'd put some local honey or syrup on her gums and get her to the ER vet if you regular vet is closed as these tiny dogs have little in the way of reserves. |
Sick Yorkie Please take your baby to a vet ASAP as she sounds very ill. It is a holiday weekend and not as easy to see a vet if you need one. Could you call the vet tonight and tell him what is happening and get to see him? What were the tests and diagnosis? You have a tiny baby who can get really sick and dehydrated very quickly. Please let us know how she is and what the vet says. So sorry she is feeling sick. |
Diarrhea, vomiting, being wobbly are all indicators that your pup needs to go to a vet ASAP. They can go down quickly with continued diarrhea and vomiting. If your vet is not open, look for an emergency clinic. Please keep us posted. |
I just gave her a bath and she isn't wobbling anymore...so i'm assuming she was walking oddly because she made a mess all over herself :\ I did bring her to the vet two days ago and was told it could be from her eating something she shouldn't have. Like i said, I was given two different liquid medications which haven't seemed to have worked. I was just curious as to what people thought it could be..I have been researching all day and thought it could be Giardia. |

I don't think its hypoglycemia. I had a dog who recently passed and was hypoglycemic and she isn't showing any of the same symptoms. I will try this anyways...it can't hurt! Thank you. |
Hi and welcome to YT I also joined when Buster was seriously ill and I was looking for advice. I got the best advice out there take him to a Vet and I am glad I did it saved his life. I know you saw a Vet but if you think the medicine is not helping and your tiny dog is vomiting and has diarrhea they can become dehydrated very quickly. This happened to Buster and he had to be put on an IV to hydrate him and he was becoming very weak. These are dangerous/life threatening symptoms for tiny dogs. I really don't think the wobbling has anything to do with being messy it is a symptom of weakness not neatness. I would be very worried and honestly would want to take her to an emergency Vet. I feel so bad for her and don't know how to help :( Take her to another Vet better safe than sorry. Sending prayers for your Yorkie. You are her advocate. |
I myself wouldn't bathe a dog who was ill - you never know if you are using up whatever reserves they might have left. I just clean the messy part, hand-dry that hair with a dryer or wrap them in a towel and save the dog the upset of a full bath as most dogs really don't like bath-time and it's quite stressful to many of them. If they are wobbly, having recently vomited and had diarrhea, I just wrap them in a towel and head out to the vet ASAP and worry about clean-up later. It could be the medicine hasn't fully kicked in or she's got complications or it's not a simple GI-tract upset but something else that needs further investigation. She needs to see a vet if she's still vomiting and having diarrhea. Usually when a dog doesn't get any better, there is no charge for a f/up vet visit itself, only charges for tests done or other medications dispensed during that visit. |
How is she now? Has the V/D stopped? If you think it is Giardia doesn't that have to be treated soon? There is not a lot of leeway with tiny dogs and she needs diagnosis and care if she is still sick. Praying she just has a tummy upset and improves soon. Please let us know how she is. Hope she has a good night. |
You are looking at a long holiday weekend....not really a good thing for your baby to wait for another 3-4 days, having already been sick for several days....with medication that you feel did not seem to be helping. These little dogs can go from "up, playful and fine" to "half dead to dead", all within 24-36 hours, while we research and study and think about it and wait and see.....I would strongly advise you to get this baby back to a vet for follow up ASAP..... |
She isn't wobbly! That was my mistake. I guess she was 'embarrassed' to walk around normally since she made a mess on herself. She is acting normal now..i continued to give her the medication and it seems to be working as of now. She's drinking and eating completely normally. The dehydration was a big worry to me because i wasn't sure how to encourage her to drink but she's been drinking and eating as normal. She hasn't vomitted or thrown up today or as of last night so i'm hoping she is feeling better! If i see any other sign of diarrhea or vomiting, i'm going to take her to the vet. I really think she is feeling better though! Thank you for the help. |
Sick girl Thank you for the positive update:-) So happy your baby is doing well now and no more V/D. Perhaps she was not long enough on the meds to make her better, but now they are kicking in and she is on the mend. Hope she stays that way and that if she did reverse you would take her to the vet. Always nice to get updates and good news :-) By the way did the vet ever give you a diagnosis or did he think it was just an upset? |
Glad to hear she is doing better. |
