9 month old with broken leg Aiden is 9 months. He broke his front left leg a few days ago. I'm not in a position to pay for the surgery right now. As of right now his leg is splinted. It doesn't seem to bother him that his leg is broken. It makes me nervous that he wants to play like he did before. I am aware of the care credit as I was denied for it. He is taking Tramadol every 8 hours. Saying that he is so small will the surgery hurt him more than just splinting it? He doesn't like to be in his kennel so I've taken a few days off from work to stay home with him. I don't like seeing him so hopeless all day. |
YIKES!! I would think you pup would have to be crate restricted at least. Did the vet think surgery was best? Was the vet an ortho specialist? That is really scarey, hope all turns out well and good luck. |
I'm not sure if he was an ortho specialist as he was not there when I was there. A nurse advised I get the surgery on his behalf. I'm not sure if it's mandatory to get the surgery but he isn't in any noticeable pain right now. We have an appointment Friday with our regular vet. I hope to get a positive update on his leg. |
I have no experience with broken bones other than what I've read on this site. If you do a search here you can find more info. I would definately recommend taking your pup to an ortho specialist, it will be much better for him & will probably save you $$ in the long run. You say you were denied care credit, can you borrow from family or sell something to raise the money needed? I know there is a post here with info for help with paying for vet bills, maybe you can find help there. Good luck to you, and your pup will be in my prayers. |
It really depends on the break. Do not let him run around at ALL. Jess broke both her radius and ulna and they cast her. It was totally useless and almost ended up costing her her leg. I ended up paying for bone grafts and surgery to the tune of 3500.00. The bone starts to calcify the longer you wait the more costly it is. Do you have a pic of the xray? Some, though very few can recover with a cast but again, depends on the break. Do not, though let the dog run around at all.....I kept Jess in a cage for 6 weeks after surgery and because of that both her radius and ulna healed. She did not walk at all. |
Sorry about your puppy's leg! I went through the exact issue with my little guy back in February. I was also devastated to hear the cost of the surgery however if both bones are broken (ulna and radius) which was the issue in my case then surgery seemed to be the only option for full recovery. The specialist told me that the only other option would be amputation as the bones will not stay in place with just a cast and heal on their own. I am so thrilled with the results. After 12 weeks of follow up appointments and X-rays etc. the leg was perfectly healed and he is now able to run and jump and play as he was before. It is a huge financial decision but honestly you could waste a lot of money and suffering attempting to cast over and over. I saw 3 vets in my area and all of them said they wouldn't even waste their time casting it won't work. Best wishes to you! I'm sure you are feeling very helpless I know the feeling! |

PLEASE you must find a way to fix your puppy's leg. I don't know exactly where the break is, but in the front leg it is rare for it to heal with only a splint. If you cannot do this, I suggest you consider turning him over to someone or a rescue who can help him. They don't show pain but that does not mean they are not in pain. I am so sorry this has happened. |
