Vomit Tinged w/Blood; Need to Take Temp Anyone please offer very concrete instructions on how to take temp of my Yorkie. This is first time no one is around to do it for me - no one else around at moment and not supposed to drive to vet unless emergency (am recovering from day surgery). About 5+ hours ago, Liberty vomited - a lot of watery stuff, clear, and with a lot of very small blood spots. Scaring the S@$% out of me (sorry for language). No vomiting since then. He is alert, very responsive & wanting to follow me around (I'm making him stay in his bed or my lap mostly). Respiration fine, eyes clear. Normally doesn't eat this early (not for 2-3 more hours, even when offered this early). His vet says to take his temp. Not sure how. Stupid questions - can use digital? How far to insert? Can use a probe cover? Dr. H says to call him back ASAP if over 101.5 and then I'll just have to taxi over. Instructions welcome. Yes you can use a digital thermometer with a probe protector. How old is your dog??,,,how large ??....is this a little puppy or a grown dog?? With a digital thermometer, lubricate the end with vaseline or K-Y jelly and insert the tip about 1" into the dogs rectum.....you have to be sure you have the dog secured tightly so he isnt jumping around, or you could cause injury to his rectum if he is struggling violently and you have a probe in his rectum. Please update on temp when you get it! Anymore vomiting? How much blood was in the first vomit? If he vomits again and it is bloody or has more blood than the first episode, you are going to have to take pup in.....he could just have irritation to his stomach lining from not eating....have you fed him the bland chicken and rice yet? Dont give him too much....you dont want to over feed him to make him full, just want to get some food in there to buffer the stomach acid.... |
Sick baby I am sorry your boy has had this worrying episode, but hope you are able to take the temp and that it is ok. If he will take a little bland food that might settle his tummy, and I hope that he has no more vomiting episodes. I feel for you if he needs a vet visit and you are still recovering from day surgery. Hope you might be able to ask someone to take him for you? Get well soon both of you. Thanks so much for the responses. Update: Liberty is 2 1/2 yrs old, otherwise great health. I was ALARMED about the blood. Freaked me out!!!! I'd say there was about 1/2 tsp. total, but hard to tell as the spots were dispersed and not at all thick - so possibility that a little looked like a lot. Very scary!!!! His wt. is abt. 5 lb. A neighbor helped with the temp. With the probe cover, it was only 99.6. Got him to eat 1 tsp. of pkgd. chicken breast. He wanted more but I didn't let him (yet). He declined water. Called Dr. H. again. He says temp not normal and concerning but the low temp. may be due to the probe cover and to consider taking again without cover in an hour. Will do that and post the new temp. Liberty and I sooo appreciate the messages. Knock wood, he is doing much better. No signs of nausea, no more blood, and temp normal. I've kept him very quiet (he's enjoying being spoiled, I'm sure). Am feeding him very tiny bits of chicken (I have added the rice to the chicken, Yorkiemom 1). Please keep the prayers going that we don't see any more blood. That was so scary.
