Loss of Back Legs
 
So I took Lincoln, my 7 year old Yorkie I got about a week ago, to the vet 2 days ago to fix an ear infection that's been bothering him. Well, all was fine up until this morning. He's been on Prednisone once a day and Baytrix twice a day with some ear drops.
We woke up this morning around 9 to go get breakfast and when I set him down he just completely fell over! His back legs don't work! All the vets are closed until tomorrow and I can't afford an emergency vet unless it's a real emergency. Is this an emergency or will he be alright until tomorrow?

His back legs don't work? That is a real emergency. Vet is my advice. As quickly as possible.

I would call this a "real emergency". Something is absolutely wrong if he can't use his back legs all of a sudden. Is it any better? Did he eat/drink? Does he seem "present" / with it? Did his bladder lose control? Check his gums and make sure they're pink and not white.

Well.....if he was walking around yesterday, and today he is partially paralyzed, I would say that could be considered an emergency and deserves a visit to the vet......

He's conscious, doesn't seem to be in any pain, he eats and drinks, pees if I set him down outside. It's more like half of him if drunk. Trust me, if he seemed in obvious distress I'd already be there. It's just very strange.
Edit: his gums are pink.

Edit #2: I called the emergency vet, they told me to keep an eye on him and not give any more medicine and to come in tomorrow unless he gets worse. They seem to think it's an inner ear problem.

I don't believe any Emergency Vet would tell you this over the phone, I really don't, I'm sorry. And I'm sorry but if you woke up this morning and your legs didn't work...would you call it an emergency?


This is horrible, I'm very sad and alarmed for your pup.....

Gotta say I agree. I wouldn't even bother calling if my dog'so legs weren't working, I'd just go. Truth be told, I have rushed a Bearded Dragon to an emergency vet for leg paralysis.

His legs are not paralyzed. his legs move just fine. It's walking that's the issue. It's like he's drunk.
And I may be young but I'm not loving the insinuation Im not a good owner here. I described the issue, they said inner ear problem. It makes sense really.

NEEDS TO BE SEEN BY A VET....
NEED TO SAVE FOR EMERGENCIES get insurance...this could be neuro, inner ear, there are so many possibilities...


Again, if you woke up this morning and your legs weren't working and you couldn't walk right??????????????????

Not sure where anyone said bad owner, and have no idea what age you are, but....sure, could be inner ear. Could also be a bacterial infection, a spine or neurological problem, which can be very, very serious. Your dog deserves to be seen. But it is your dog, your wallet, your choice. Best of luck.

I'm 17. I rescued this dog 5 days ago. I have a job but not sure I can afford a 400$+ vet visit because it is a Sunday. Its an hour and a half away. Im going to see if my parents will just give me an IOU here.

Keep us up to date. I'm really concerned for the little guy.

That's one thing that is so very important when getting a pet is making sure you can take care of it in emergencies. This is not normal and he does need to go to the vet now because it could end up being something very serious and waiting may make it worse.
