Please Help Me
 

I don't know what to do, so I need everyone's opinion. I have a 5 year yorkie 8lbs.....

My yorkie was perfectly normal, playing, eating, drinking etc. The only problem she had was a pee problem where when she was sleeping she would become wet on her bottom but it wasn't yellow and it didn't smell like pee. We took her to the vet and they prescribed Proin and it helped. They never ran blood because she had no symptoms of anything wrong.

Later down the road we wanted to get her a teeth cleaning. They did blood work and found her kidney levels were really high and the vet does not like it. However, he is shocked that my yorkie is not showing any other signs. He wanted us to start the k/d renal food. i bought dry food (she wanted nothing to do with so I returned it). I bought her the k/d treats and every once in a while she will eat it. She was eating the canned food but only 1/2 of a 1/4 of a can. The vet said she should eat about 1/4 of a can a day. He also prescribed her Azodyl 1 capsule every 12 hours. And to stop the Proin for right now. Then he wanted to see us in 2 weeks to see where her levels are.

Well I called him 3 days before I went to see him again and told him she is not eating as much as she use to and I was worried about her weight. He said to mix a little bit of grilled chicken into the wet food. Now she eats all of it and a little more.

We went back to the vet and she gain a couple of ounce which is great because I was scared she lost a lot of weight. However, her levels are a lot worse :( He basically said he doesn't know what else to do unless I wanted to go see a specialist which is going to cost a fortune (and I love my dog very much) but I can't afford that. He said to continue the K/D Diet and the Azodyl. He said to us to just spend all the time you can with her because he wasn't sure how long.

Now since she is off the Proin she is having peeing spells again.

We are going to call the vet tomorrow and ask a couple of questions. So here is what I need opinions for....

1. Would you stop feeding her the K/D Diet? I don't think it's doing anything if at all making it worst.

2. Would you stop giving her the Azodyl?

I keep thinking in my head, if she doesn't have long with us why wouldn't i just give her the foods and treats she loves.

I'm so sorry you and your pup are going through this. I understand that times are hard financially, but your baby is only 5 years old and really needs a specialist. I would do everything in my power to come up with the funds to get her the care she so desperately needs. Have you considered applying for Carecredit? Maybe you could borrow the money or sell something? If worst came to worst, I would surrender the pup to a rescue to insure she got the medical care she needs. I know that sounds harsh, and I'm sorry for that. I just think that if you truly love her, you need to make sure she gets the care she needs.... Whatever it takes. I would consider having a urine culture and sensitivity done. Kidney disease does not usually cause incontinence, but infection can and can also cause elevated kidney numbers. Your dog is very young to have advanced kidney disease, and there may be a reason that can be identified and treated.

Ask your vet if you can try Purina NF it's another kidney diet and dogs seem to like it better.
I would try to see a specialist but if you can't then keep with your vet's advice. My dog was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease at age 6 but with proper diet and care she's still alive and almost 14.

I'm sorry to hear about your girl. Did they do a kidney flush when she was diagnosed? If not, I would definitely ask your vet about it. I work in a vet clinic and I have a 14 year old Yorkie that was diagnosed with kidney failure about 7 months ago. Our vets always recommend IV fluids to start with. Bear was on IV fluids for 5 days to flush his kidneys and his BUN came back into normal levels. They did go back up after being off IV fluids but still are not as high as they were. Now I give him Sub Q fluids at home every other day to maintain. I would keep your girl on the Azodyl. I feel like it has made a big difference in Bear keeping his numbers down along with the Sub Q fluids. Kidney failure can also make them nauseous and not want to eat so she may need something for that too. I buy Zantac at the store and make a suspension out of it (from my vet's instructions) and it's very cheap to do it that way. Good luck. I hope she gets to feeling better.

I'm so sorry to hear this sad news but there are many dogs with Kidney problems and worse who can live long lives. I think you should reconsider the specialist, take a loan, get care credit, borrow, because it is worth it. It may be a little costly at first but I can't imagine not doing everything you can for this pup who is not yet at a critical stage. Think twice, your family member's life depends on it.

The first blood draw: BUN 95mg/CREA 3.2

The second blood draw 2 weeks later: BUN 130/CREA 4.3.
