GIARDIA,again I lost my 8 yo Yorkie three weeks ago. I was able to get an ew baby, BB, last week. The first yorkie, 8yo, had GIARDIA when I took her home from "said" breeder. Now, after going to another breeder, my BB has GIARDIA! I do not understand why breeders do not recognize this disease before selling pups???? |
I am very sorry to hear this. My knowledge of giardia is limited, but I think there is a possibility that your new baby could have been infected at your home. I'm sure others who know more will chime in. In addition to treating your puppy, you need to read up on how to protect against re-infection. |
Here are some tips: CDC - Giardia - Giardia and Pets |
Unfortunately, giardia is present all over the environment and is Very difficult to diagnose. Often, a persistent case of diarrhea is treated with fenbendazole just in case it's giardia. Does your puppy have diarrhea? Is that why he was tested for giardia? Giardia is visible under a microscope only at a very particular phase in its development, so the chance of testing on exactly the right day is a long shot. Absent diarrhea, I don't test or treat for giardia. |
Giardia Per my contract with breeder, BB needed to be examined by a vet within 10 days. She passed exam, but also had fecal test. I was shocked the next day when the vet reported GIARDIA. She has no dirarhea (can't spell, now) and is eating and seems fine. My yorkie 8 years ago had it after coming home from breeder. She did not (hopefully) get it in my small apartment, as I had the rug cleaned and the floors I washed before she came. The few yorkie people in Central Park made me more at ease, this unfortunately is common in litters, the pups eat each others poop. The breeders are not home to watch what is going on..... So, she is on PANACUR and an antibiotic for 7 days. Then I will wait one week, before RABIES,which she has not gotten yet. she is 3.2, need to build her UP! I am anxious about discussions of too many vacines, so I will be studying before getting other shots...... |

Oh my! I don't know who to get advice from? the vet put her on those meds and the breeder agreed to them, before I filled prescription. Breeder said" thanks for telling me", now I will test the rest of the dogs!!!! She has started and will complete the course on Saturday (7days). then she is to be bathed and I will wait a weekbefore getting Rabies, soshe can go out. BB was 6 months yesterday. I do not have a pic of her to post yet, so we still are looking at STAR,who is in heaven........ |

Most definitely wait a couple/few weeks for her to be completely healthy before getting rabies. You don't ever want to vaccinate a sick pup, or a pup in recovery. Also, always get rabies on its own - not w/ any other shots on the same day...you probably already know all this, but thought I'd mention it. |
BB Thank you! I have had yorkies before, but each new baby is a challenge! My heartis still broken over STAR's passing, she had collasped trachea for two years and BAD allergies last summer, so I want to be extra careful with BB. |
I have a friend that is going through this with her newly adopted pup from the Houston Humane Society. She had to treat her other dog and even her cat. She had to wash all bed sheets, clean floors and furniture as well as pick up all poop from her yard and disgard it properly. From what I understand it can be passed to humans if not careful. Her dog had two kinds of worms, Giardia and another one. How is your pup now? |
