Patella luxation My Roufianna was diagnosed with Patella luxation @ 6 mos. of age. Now 8 yrs. old I fear it's beginning to hinder her activity level and comfort. She has a companion, Cosmo, a 3 yr. old Morkie who has probably helped keep her active this long. Has n e 1 experienced knee surgery? What degree of success can be expected? Would u put your best friend through it again? We live in NY on Long Island. Tx Stephen |
I've never experienced knee surgery, but many people have on YT with great success. It's a long drive for you, but my vet, Dr. Wen, in Westhampton, might be able to honestly access if there is anything that can be done to alleviate the pain other than surgery. I've seen so many success stories over the years with acupuncture and other treatments. He combines conventional Western medicine and Chinese therapies. To me, he's a miracle worker. I live only 22 miles from him, but he has patients from much greater distances. You might also try the hospital at the link below, especially if surgery is necessary, but I can't personally vouch for them. I teach not far from you at Wheatley. I hope you are able to find help with your little girl. My first Yorkie many years ago had luxating patellas, and surgery was not recommended for her. I wish she had someone treating her as much as I trust Dr. Wen. We did it once in one knee and are in the 8 week recovery of the other knee. I would talk to an orthopedic specialist. It's a hard recovery but if your dog is in pain you really need think about it. |
Yes, I would do surgery on a dog that was 8 years old that needed it. My dog was 11.5 when he jumped off a bed and tore his ligament and his patellar lunation was fixed at the same time. But, sometimes strict crate rest with anti-inflammatories can help. Also, check the teeth, if the dog needs a dental, the dental disease could be exacerbating the knee issue (sounds crazy but my 14 y.o. just was "cured" of his shoulder tendonitis after having a dental). |

They recover rapidly once the stitches are out, but you have to make sure they don't jump and re-injure themselves during the recovery period. A lot of confining to a crate or x-pen may be required during the first 8 weeks or so, and the doctor will also have guidelines on physical therapy (exercises and range-of-motion) during the recovery period. My vet said that the success rate of the surgery is around 90%. Have an experienced veterinary orthopedic specialist evaluate your dog and perform the surgery, if that's the route you take. |
