Barney ate Onions and I made things worse Two nights ago, Barney snatched some onion that fell on the floor. It was a very small amount, and not a toxic dose (although it doesn't take much to make it problematic). I decided with his history of gastritis and pancreatitis that I would induce vomiting and take back the onion! I administered a proper dosage of hydrogen peroxide and waited. He vomited twice and gave me a piece of veggie and potato from breakfast but NO onion. I kept waiting and he vomited again and this time he gave me nothing but foam! I gave up and figured he would be ok and I went to bed. He ate breakfast fine the next morning and seemed like his usual self. When my husband came home, he found five small piles. We thought we might have the onion but it wasn't!! Ugh. Last night he vomited again, and I called my friend Ellie May and we discussed. We decided one more and he would go to the ER vet. We didn't get two minutes past that discussion when Barney made the decision for us. I figured 9x of vomiting was getting a little crazy, and his gums felt a little dry. He was otherwise fine. We went to the ER vet last night and they remembered him from all his other visits. LOL. They didn't remember how old he was - almost 14 now - and one of the techs was shocked. The vet said his gums were nice and pink and he was still well hydrated but she wanted to give him a small amount of fluids and a shot of anti-nausea medication called Cerenia. Lucky for Barney, he did not have to be admitted and was sent home with well wishes for a speedy recovery. I am hoping my baby doesn't have any other issues with regard to the onion and that he is feeling much better by tonight. |
I'm glad that Barney is feeling better today after he little incident with the onion. NO matter how careful or responsible that we try to be with our little guys there is always that chance that an accident could happen. Luckily for Barney you are a very informed pet owner and followed through with a quick trip to the ER vet. |
so glad he seems to be doing better. |
If it was a small amount of onion, maybe it was partially digested and transparent when he threw up, and you didn't notice it? I'm glad he's feeling better! |
So happy Barney is ok!! |
Glad Barney is ok! |
I'm glad Barney is okay! Poor boy. Still fast with kitchen floor cleanup at 14! Tell him he has completely burst my bubble. My reflexes are getting worse with age. How am I supposed to keep up with Max ;):)? |
Glad to hear that Barney is ok. Our little lovebugs can sure cause us some major worry. |
Glad he's doing ok. Gosh that was an expensive and scary bit of onion. I'm curious, how much onion did he get and was it raw or cooked, and what is Barney's weight? |
I'm so glad to hear that Barney is feeling better! |
Im glad Barney is doing okay. I think this could happen to certain dogs when peroxide is used some dogs would just be too sensitive to it. It can be something that could potentially save a dogs life in some circumstances but you always take a chance they could have an adverse reaction to it like Barney did |
Glad that Barney is feeling better...doesn't take them long to snatch that little bit of whatever that they aren't supposed to have. Buster is a real Hoover...sending big hug for Barney! |
I'm so happy that Barney is ok. Wow 14!! You and Barney are Blessed!! |
Oh yes, Mini did this too and for that reason the ex would not allow onions or grapes (almost died from the grapes) into the house....so glad Barney is ok. So glad he has you. |
I am so glad Barney is ok . . . Even at 14 they are quick little buggers ! I could just sweep the floor and Galen still finds stuff. |
