9 weeks old - pneumonia? Hey all - We just got our puppy last week and he is officially 9 weeks old. He has been acting just fine since we got him until yesterday. He started to sneeze probably 10 times in total all day. He had been eating/sleeping/playing as a normal puppy would since we picked him up. He had his week checkup at the vet and she said he just needs to eat a bit more. Additionally, he did have a worm in his stool sample which he is being treated for now with Albon. As we are getting ready to leave, he sneezed a bit of of clear snot came deform his nose. The vet was then concerned of possible pneumonia based on that? She suggested that we swab him and get an X-ray already. She sent us home with clavamox to help treat/prevent pneumonia outbreak. We are now very concerned that he has pneumonia but really aren't seeing any signs other than him sleeping a decent amount since his 2 hour vet visit. Should we be concerned? Thanks! |
HI and welcome to YT :)! You're doing everything right, so try not to worry too much. Your kiddo may not actually have pneumonia, but may have kennel cough or another "cold" -- which in puppies can progress quickly and dangerously to pneumonia - so this is probably why your vet wanted to give clavamox. Did you get he kennel cough vaccine? If yes, he probably got this cold from the vaccine itself. Personally, I only give the core vaccines to my dogs - not the elective ones like kennel cough. It's not one you're required to give, btw. |

Thanks for checking in guys! Ever since the day we took him to the vet, he's been a very active puppy! Probably the most active he's been since coming home. He is eating, going outside, etc with no problems. He still has an occasional sneeze, but it seems to be only when he comes from outside. He is still hovering between 3 and 3.2 lbs, and the vet said that he was underweight a lot for 9 weeks? I was doing some searching on here, and this seemed to be an average weight for a yorkie-bichon mix at 9 weeks. Please correct me if I'm wrong! He received his initial shots before we picked him up, and he get's his next round in 2 weeks. We won't be using that vet anymore and will be going to the one we take our other dog. He seems to be responding to the meds he was given, so I'm not sure if that is making a difference or not. |
