Baytril / Vet Recommendation Hi Yorkie Community. My little girl is sick again, now leaking urine after being diagnosed with pancreatitis. These appear to be unrelated. The vet's theory is bacterial infection and she's in Baytril. Here are my questions: 1) she's not good on Baytril (or meds generally)- the dosage of 22.7 (once per day / split in two) is high for her and she's sluggish and/or nauseous. She's 7 lbs and 12 years old. Has anyone had experience lowering the dosage? 2) does anyone have a good recommendation (ideally great) of a vet in NYC who specializes in homeopathic and holistic approaches and who is not crazy busy or a prima-donna. I have had nothing but horrible experiences here, which continues to shock me as it defies logic. (Please note, i will never again set foot at the Animal Medical Center or see anyone affiliated there as one of their touted preeminent liver shunt expert sergeants killed my little yorkie last year.) Thanks for the help. |
What about the ASPCA as an option for another vet? I have no experience w/ Baytril but you could ask for another antibiotic if this one does not agree w/ her. |
Hi, I am formally from NY, The Bronx, Have you tried the ASPCA located on 86th St. and East River Drive. I my self have never used them, but I knew ppl that did, they raved about the help they received, for the issues their dogs had. When I lived in The Bronx I could not find a good vet. This is the vet I used for 5 years before moving to Pa. which was 13 years ago. At that time they had 4 or 5 vets at their clinic.They use to be a 24/7 clinic, I don't know if they have changed that policy over the last 13 years, but you can call and see. I lived in the Throggs Neck area, by car it was a 20 minute drive. I used County Animal Clinic...1574 Central Park Ave. (corner of Tuckahoe Rd.) ...Yonkers, NY...914-779-5000.. Good luck |
If the vet is believes it is a UTI. They should always do a urinalysis and culture. They should also select for sensitivity to antibiotics. They can not just guess for what antibiotics an animal needs. You can not lower antibiotic doses there is a certain range of mg/kg they need to stay in for the drug to be effective. If not you could get resistance and this leads to more trouble. And you always need to finish the course of antibiotics. If you do not like your vet AMC (ASPCA) is great but any referral place will be expensive. |
Thank you all! My dog is doing a little better, thanks to my lowering of the dosage inLine with the website for the medication. I have had no response from the vet to my calls relating to this issue. It's frustrating because I specifically raised this issue of her sensitivity with him whilst there and several times on the phone thereafter and also it should be in her chart from before. It's tricky I suppose because she has routine bouts of urinary issues and we have to switch her antibiotics. However this is no excuse for not addressing this reaction and all thr more reason why it's absurd we can't get to the root cause. They prefer to treat (or sort of treat) the symptom each time I suppose each time. In any event thank you for the recommendations. I am most certainly going to take my girl elsewhere. One must keep trying. I hope to find caring and thorough doctors soon. |
