Excellent explanation of a PDA
I'm surprised that they cath the pups to close the PDA. We've had a trial run of the docs using this technique in our babies, but they are reserving it for the ones who are too unstable (for reasons other than the PDA) for surgery. The surgical option you are talking about, is that a laparoscopic placement of a clip? Do they ever use Indocin or Ibuprofen to try and close them the way they will try with preemies?
I know it's easy to be angry at the breeder. But another way of looking at it might be that she did what she could to save the pup's life. She could have taken the easy route and just had her PTS.
BTW, Londyn can come stay with me any time. | I am not sure about the scope, but imagine so since they talked about going in through the ribs. I did not speak directly with the surgeon. I will ask, though....interesting question.
No, they cannot treat with meds like they do with human babies. The ductus in the dog does not have smooth muscle so it does not respond. The only time they do use any meds is once they are in heart failure...thank goodness we have her early.
Oh, I agree, it is better for the breeder to save the pup....BUT people who breed should be prepared for things like this. BUT (yes, another but) that would cut into their profits. I do hope she takes a long look at the pups she is breeding because this is congenital.
hahah....you could have her immediately if she were in my home :p Toooooo tiny...scary little thing! She is darling, though. :) |
