My poor Darla. Just diagnosed stage 2&3 LP I just came back from the vets where we found out she has stage 3 on her left and stage 2 on her right. She's limping off the 2nd leg as her little knee is swollen. She jumped off the recliner last night after stealing a napkin and she must have landed wrong. They gave us metacam for the next 5days. I'm so torn up. What do I do? A 5k surgery is not in my budget. I've just come home from a 2 week stay at the children's hospital for my special needs son. So my rainy day funds is exhausted. I'm still trying to clean up my credit from my divorce. Darla no longer qualifies for insurance as she now has a pre-existing condition. My vet said that her priority is getting her fixed first. As there are no tares yet. She was scheduled for her spay when my son got really sick. I'm so upset. One of my first questions to the breeder was LP and if her dogs were cleared and if any previous litters had issues. So frustrated. |
Aw, I'm so sorry about the diagnosis, I know it's scary. What about Care Credit, have you applied for that yet? If not, that's def an option. On the upside, I had Wylie's LP fixed about a year ago and for both knees it was around $1500 - so it shouldn't be anywhere near 5k for you. If that's what's being quoted, I'd def get a 2nd opinion elsewhere. |
Yes I tried care credit a year ago when I first got her home and she was so sick and traumatized. Because my credit is still on the low end it's improving but not in leaps and bounds it's still to low. My family are not very animal friendly and just say it's cheaper to out her down. I had rudeness like that. She's my baby. She picks up on my anxiety at night and calms me. The vet said each leg without a tear is minimum 2200 each not including labs or pre surgery check ups. I about died when they told me the cost. |

Honestly, I'd get another opinion and/or call around for prices in your area or even up to a couple hours from your area bc that price is high. I live in Metro Phoenix where vet care can be pricey, and it wasn't near that price for my Wylie. |
The vet called asking how Darla was today and I told her she seems good but sometimes she limps or hops around. She isn't acting like she's in pain as she's trying to chase flies and play with her toys. I've almost eliminated her jumping off anything as I catch her before her she try's to jump. She is worried Darla May have a partial tear. She's going to add tramadol to her meds and if in a week she's not better they want to do radiographs and surgery. I don't know what I'm going to do. |
Will the vet set you up on a payment plan? Do they know your financial situation? I'm sorry that this has happened to your baby. Buster had LP in both knees and a torn ACL. It's been a rough three years since our venture started, I wouldn't listen to the family members who want you to put her down. But I would definitely try to keep her from jumping...maybe crate her if necessary. |
No my vets office only payment plan is the care credit. I'm going to try a grant and see if we qualify. It's my only other option till January. |
