3 yr old occasional shivering distended abdomen won't jump arched back Symptoms above. Went to vet 2 days ago they gave probiotic tablets and a syringe with stuff he's supposed to eat 2ml of every 8 hours. Pro viable I believe Rimadyl he gets one every 24 hours and metronidazole every 12 hours He's shivering/trembling unless I cover him Not jumping and hardly wants to walk up one step Stomach is hard but feels tense like its muscles. I symptoms are the same as when I took him to vet They ran blood test which showed mild inflammation in intestines everything else normal Now he keeps getting up and moving I can tell he's uncomfortable. What can I do? He is drinking. Actually ive drinking and then throwing some up. He does thus normally Don't believe he s**t today but did multiple times yesterday So worried. Anything I cando? |
I am not a vet, but the symptoms sound very serious. If the vet didn't do one already, he needs to have a stool sample examined, and perhaps an xray or ultrasound of his abdomen to help determine the cause of the distended abdomen and rule out intestinal obstruction. |
I hope this pup is better this morning. If not, he needs to be seen ASAP by a vet. Either your vet (or if they are not open because it is Saturday) or an emergency vet. The symptoms sound very serious and could be any number of things. Sounds very much like pancreatitis and that is not something to play with....it can kill a pup! |
Abdominal distension can be indicative of some very serious things; he's also "posturing" his back to get relief. You do truly need to head back to the vet to get answers. This isn't normal at all, and I know you know this already - I'm just reiterating/confirming what you already know. Did you change anything in his diet? Is he known for eating things outside that he shouldn't, things that could cause blockage? |
He's urinating and pooping still. Today it's a bit more solid and close to normal size. Still has hard abdomen. I called vet this am and told them he was still same and they said just don't let him run because it could be his back. They tested his stool. Believe it came back normal. I gave him pumpkin 2 hours ago. He's up walking and even trotting around but still has tense abdomen his tail is up now and he's not arching his back anymore. Should I take him to er still? |
He's back to begging so that's a good sign. I have been feeling around his stomach and it feels softer today and it's really seeming like he's tensing it up for some reason. So he's begging me for a cheese it so with one hand ihave my thumb and fingers on his belly and I'm applying pressure. It's giving a bit then when i give him a cheese it it softens up and feels normal but maybe a bit tense |
When they said it could be his back what did they suggest? X ray or ultrasound sounded like The way to go in my mind... |
Vet didn't suggest either yet. He seems better now at least he wants food again. When it comes to herc money isn't a limiting factor. This little guy hangs out with me all day. I take him in my truck with me to job sites. So I did everything suggested |
At er now. Woke up this am and he seemed way worse. Er doc crated him and said he thinks he has degenerative disk disease and some numbing in hind legs. Probably was feeling better because of pain killers. Little guy is going to get steroids and pain killers and no movement till this heals |
Poor boy, I know what back pain feels like. So glad you took him in again. |

He's in my lap now. doped up. xrays showed the vertebra above his shoulders fairly close together. vet gave him an enema also to relieve any discomfort caused there. there was no compacted stool though. he was shifting weight from his hind legs to his front and the vet said there was numbness in the rear of him. can this be healed from rest alone? he's prednisone. Steroids and something to keep him from getting an ulcer |

Day two after er. he's not in pain. Supposed to give him .2ml every 12 hours plus the steroids. About to give him his fourth dose. he's throwin up ALOT but keeps eating and drinking. doesn't seem to be urinating orpooping which is troubling but he does have an appetite for boiled chicken. |

Are you giving the meds with food? Or is he throwing up food or just the meds? I'd call the vet... also: was he checked for pancreatitis? |
