A terrible accident Hello to all. I'm new here and only stumbled upon this site because I'm scared and don't know what to expect. My little 7 pound yorkie was hit by a car doing 55+ on Saturday 5/10/2014. He is still alive. Unbelievable, isn't it? The vet said: no broken bones, no internal injuries, no skull fracture. But he did have a concussion. He came home on Monday. He has mostly slept. He is still weak but can jump up on the couch but he is unsure of it. He was fed chicken for the past two days and I was thrilled he would eat. But today he was not offered chicken because I wanted him to be his kibble. He has not eaten all day. He has thrown up, had 3 episodes of loose stools and seems to feel worse. Has anyone in this community ever faced anything similar ? His behavior today has never occurred before. It's so hard to believe he can survive. |
I am glad your boy survived!! What kind of tests did the vet do to determine that he had no internal injuries? I would go ahead and feed him chicken right now and maybe mix in some rice. I would also talk to the vet again. If he is lethargic, pale gums, I would go to the ER tonight. |
I don't have any advise, but I am so sorry for you and your little guy. I hope he feels better soon. |
Well his symptoms are very common for a concussion . Is call the vet for some advice just to be safe . I know in humans when it gets like that after a concussion a trip back to the ER is necessary. |
Your pup needs to see a vet ASAP!!! Please do not hesitate. I don't know what tests your vet did but this sounds like it could be neurological and could be an emergency. I would find an emergency vet tonight! |

I agree.... any change in a dog not for the better after this kind of accident needs to be checked by a vet, asap. |
My Charlie was hit by a car. He also had no broken bones. However, the vet kept him there to monitor him. He said that internal injuries can show up days after the accident. He died 3 days later from internal injuries, alone at the vet's clinic. I will never forgive myself for any of it. Please, please, please, get this baby to an emergency clinic. |
I agree with everyone else. . . Sending good thoughts that your baby is ok |
I would get your baby to the emergency vet asap. It could be something internal that did not show up right away. Please, go now! |
Saying a prayer for this little one. |
Sending a prayer for this little boy. |
I am so sorry to hear of his accident, and do hope he recovers fully. I hope you have taken him back to the vet because this doesn't sound good. |
Any updates on your little one? |
Praying this little one is going to be ok.... |
My sisters Labrador was hit by a car...She seemed to be fine with only minor injuries ie some front teeth knocked out. It was only months later after a night shift (she is a paediatric nurse) that she found her dog collapsed. She had vomited, had diarrhoea and was in shock ie pale gums..She was rushed to the vets and it turned out that she had a large tear in her diaphragm. She may have had a very small tear at the time of the original accident which was not seen. She was operated on successfully although it was touch and go as the body's response to such trauma is to release toxins into the bloodstream which are deadly. I would have though that after your poor little pups head injury that he should have been restricted in his activities ie 'kept quiet '. Hoping your little pup recovers.... Shirl |
