Mucus in stool. Help. I have a 10.5 week yorkipoo. I got him when he was 8.5 weeks old and weighed 1lb 6oz, now he only weighs 1lb 4oz at 10.5 weeks (lost weight :( ). The very first night I brought him home he had stool with mucus and blood on it. I brought him to the vet immediately the next day and they tested him for parasites/worms and they came back negative. Vet said it may be from stress colitis and it should improve with time. I no longer find blood in his stool which is good but at least once a day he has a stool with mucus. Sometimes it's a little mucus on the end or sometimes it's a puddle of mucus with a little bit of poop in it. So of course, I called the vet and they gave me a probiotic to give him. He only ingested it one time and refuses to eat anymore of it (powder). I sprinkled it on his food in a bowl but he only likes to eat his food when it is scattered on the ground. I'm not sure how else to give him the probiotic. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to feed it to him or what this mucus may be caused from? It's very stressful and nerve wracking not knowing what's going on in my little guy. Is there anything else I can do for him? Are there more tests that should be/could be done? |

Did you switch his food or anything when he got home? If yes, I'd switch back to the old food. He should be tested for giardia -- even though in puppies it's more violent in terms of symptoms and he would technically be more ill, you just never know -- so I'd test for it. The problem w/ testing is that Giardia often hides under scope so it often will take more than 1 or 2 tests to confirm it's actually there. Can you give the probiotic w/ peanut butter instead of w/ food? Mash the powder into the PB and see if that works; you could also try cheese. Oftentimes, mucus at the END of a poo is just the anal glands emptying. When it's in the middle or around the poo, it's more related to GI irritation / or a pest. You may also want to try giving a bit of canned pumpkin for extra fiber to see if that helps. Is his appetite okay? |
I did not switch his food until having him for about 4 days. I then slowly mixed Amicus brand puppy kibble in with his Diamond Puppy Formula kibble. He stopped eating, so I switched him fully back to the Diamond brand. He is eating again and drinking. He is playful and acts as if nothing is wrong. However, he still has poop with mucus on it. Sometimes it's towards the end, other times its surrounding the whole stool, and sometimes (2 times) he's pooped straight mucus. This happens about once or twice a day. The rest of his stools are normal. Last night, I mixed the Purina Fortiflora probiotic in a little bit of watered down chicken broth for the first time. He ate up most of it. Hope that was an okay thing to do? |

How is your kiddo doing, any better? If not, I think I'd go in for a fecal and include a giardia test. |
