Finicky eater I have a 2 year old female yorkie, not yet spayed who weighs about 5lbs. She is long legged and very slender. She's a very finicky eater. I have a few other yorkies all spayed who eat more than they should and I am always watching their diets. I cook for her and try to give her eggs and rice and chicken and she eats a bit and then turns up her nose. She also hunches one of the other spayed females. She is not due to come into heat for a couple more months and not swollen. She has lost a few ounces in the last couple of months. Her lab work a few months ago was normal. I am going to have her spayed just have not gotten to it yet. My vet thought I should consider breeding her. She is of very nice quality. But I am just not up for it with all the worries that go along with it. My question is if I spay her would that improve her appetite? Could she have some sort of low level infection or hormonal thing going on that would cause her to act the way she does and not to want to eat? Her bones are not sticking out but I think she should put on at least 1/2 a pound. any advice would be appreciated. |
I doubt spaying her will make her eat more. I don't believe that myth at all, and my dogs are altered and lean. I think you should try a kibble she would find palatable. Rice and chicken and eggs are bland so maybe she just don't like it. I use and have not had trouble with the royal canin Yorkshire terrier food. |
I'm really glad you decided not to breed her :). It's really best left to the experts as it can be life and death...and you don't want to risk your girl. I doubt spaying will change her appetite much. I'd try a different type of food and see if that works. You can also try sprinkling Parmesan cheese on her food as it's nice and pungent. |
I have tried many different dog foods, meaning Royal Canine, Call of the Wild, Fromm's. I feed my other dogs, Nutro Natural lamb and Rice small bites and they are satisfied. I have tried mixing some canned in with it and that doesn't help. She will eat straight chicken so I know she is not totally sick but really do not think it will be healthy to just feed her chicken all the time although I am sure she would prefer that. Surely they make a caned food that is for finicky eaters. I know its not good for her but I even tried the Little Ceaser's and she turned her nose up at that as well. |
I have a picky eatter, getting her spayed didn't help. She likes health extension little bites dry food and for wet she's been eating natures recipe, she only likes the little plastic tubs or the short cans (there's 2 flavors, one is turkey stew). What does the vet think about her weight? She might just be naturally thin. |
