10 week old puppy fine one day, all sleepy the next Hi, I'm new to this forum and also a new Yorkie owner. I have a little 10 week old boy, he is so adorable but I'm not sure if his behaviour is normal as one day he will be FULL of energy and the next day he is all lethargic and sometimes pukes randomly. It literally goes in a cycle, one day fine, next day not, next day fine, etc. He occasionally coughs too. I wondered if maybe he just exhausts himself from his non stop playing one day and then needs the next day to recoup. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you! |
That sounds abnormal to me. I would see a vet. |
Has the puppy been fully vetted? Bortadella etc? Dewormed? There are so many factors that could be at play. He is only 10 weeks old but the bigger question is how much does he weight? Do you have nutracal on hand? etc., I would go to the vet regardless, this is NOT normal behavior. Welcome to YT glad you found us and PLEASE keep us posted! |

I totally agree, I have had pups 8 wks old, played all day every day wild crazy zooming. Never were tired , lethargic. Deff. take him to your vet. Better to be safe then sorry. Please keep up updated. |
There is a great new site Home | Vetrounds where you can ask a vet your question. Maybe you could ask for some info there. We have a thread about this service. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ml#post4432417 |
Thank you everyone for your help, I'm taking him to the vet today and will let you know how I get on. I hope he's ok, I'm really worried now :( |
I am glad you are taking him to the vet . . .please let us know what he says. . . Sending good thoughts |
Is it dry coughing? Maybe he has Kennel Cough, but the random puking is indeed something that would worry me. Kennel Cough's symptoms are usually just dry coughing, a runny nose, sneezing and sometimes lethargy. |
Please let us know what the vet has to say after your visit today! :) |
Be sure they check for liver shunt & MVD. |
Hope all goes well at the vet. Let us know! |
Please keep us informed. Praying everything goes well. |
Well the vet couldn't find anything wrong with him and said that it's perhaps a reaction to his vaccine. He weighs a healthy 1.5kg :) The vet said I should just keep and eye on him over the next few days and if he doesn't pick up or gets worse that I should take him back. Thank you everyone fore your kind words and support xx |
Glad he is ok. . . Vaccines can do a lot to our little guys. . . I usually space them out. . . Giving one every two weeks. It is too much for there little bodies |
It's not nice, I feel so bad for him. I was surprised they give the vaccines so young as they are so tiny. Poor baby! |
It is hard to do it. . . Galen just went for his updated vaccines . . He only got one. I am going to wait to give him another. And I already told them no lepto. |
I am in a state. After my original post my little Diego picked up and was full of life (and cheekiness) and I was so happy. The it came time for his next injections. He had them all fine and then a week later he was throwing up and has now been lethargic and unhappy for 4 days. He's eating drinking weeing and pooing but something's not right. I took him to the vet who's doing blood work and while there she heard a heart murmur! So he has a scan on Wednesday for that. I am just devastated! Can't stop crying and am so worried. I can't help but feel like I want to blame the vaccines. Has anyone else had anything like this before? |
Hello, welcome to YorkieTalk. I'm so sorry that your little Diego is unwell. I was just wondering.....has your vet ruled out lungworm? It's on the rise in Ireland and the UK and Cornwall is one of the known hotspots. Apparently young puppies can pick up the infection from their mother. Coming into contact with slugs/snails carrying the parasite is how most dogs become infected. Some dogs don't display any outward sign of infection or only present with a few of the many symptoms. Symptoms can include lethargy, coughing, vomiting. I've included a few links you can read through. Be Lungworm Aware - UK Lungworm Infection In Dogs Your Dog | Are you lungworm aware? | Dog Health and Care | Dog Care and Advice Diego probably doesn't have lungworm since he is so young and these symptoms are common in many illnesses but I thought I'd mention it.... just in case. Best of luck, I hope Diego feels better very soon. |
On the mend! Thank you so much for that info as I had never heard of it! The vet wormed him, put him on antibiotics and gave him lactulose (in case of liver shunt) and one of those is doing the trick as he played for the first time in 5 days!! Now to go and empt his outside water bowl and pick up and clean his toys! Thank you again xx |

I'm so happy that Diego is on the mend :) |
Quick update... Vet called back with blood results and it's looking like a shunt. I am devastated. Back in on Monday morning for bile acid test. He's at least VERY happy at the moment and can't seem to get enough of playing and chewing everything. I'll update once we know for certain what it is xx |
