Need advice on new puppy I just received my new puppy! Love her!!!! I just found out from the vet that the dog has antigen for giardia. No signs of diarrhea and the dog seems healthy otherwise. Was given Panacur from the breeder when we received the dog and have administered that for three days…Should we keep the dog? Any advice? Is this common from reputable breeders? The dog is 12 weeks old. |
if you love her i would say keep her. did you talk to your breeder?? i am not sure how common it is in a good breeder. hopefully others will chime in. hope you girl is ok with no signs going forward. |

It is not normal that the breeder gave you Panacur. Did the breeder acknowledge a giardia problem when you picked up the puppy? What did your vet recommend to do relative to giving the Panacur? I would follow your vet's recommendations, and read up on how to care for a dog with giardia. There are things relative to cleaning and disposal of poop that are necessary to prevent the dog from continually re-infecting herself. |
Thank you I did speak with the breeder and she said it's her standard practice to give Panacur for all new puppies because they could get diarrhea. From my research I am seeing if the puppy is stressed (going to a new home) then the giardia can reappear. I do love the dog but have only had her for a few days. Vet said the three days of Panacur is fine for now and to watch for any symptoms. I then have to do a follow up in three months. The breeder did not admit that she has had a problem with this in any of her dogs prior to this one. I find this hard to believe. I think Giardia will be manageable but wondered what others thought on this. Luckily the dog is going on potty pads and not infecting the neighborhood thus far or our yard. :( |

I wouldn't stress too much about this. Your baby is 12 weeks old and you have proper vet care. Enjoy your puppy! |
Hi, I'm new here myself. At the animal hospital we give Fenbendazole & Metronidazole for Giardia treatment. Panacur is given for intestinal worms and a good idea to give to all young puppies. And yes, repeat Panacur in 3 weeks.Hope this helps :) |
