Rapid down turn - crab gait and circling Our 4 year old boy Yogi has had a rapid downturn this last week starting with crab gait about a week ago that has now changed to very frequent circling. He's struggled to keep food down and we've put him on a veggie / chicken diet with coconut water and he has managed to keep his food down better but it needs to be a small spoon sized portion every 2 hours or so. He's also been bumping into things head on so we fear for his eyesight. He's generally restless and sometimes loses his balance and falls down such as when he shakes himself. He's in for general blood and bile acid tests on Tuesday following the easter break- we fear a liver shunt. Unfortunately we have no insurance for veterinary cover and its such a shame to see the lad go through such a sudden downturn so please any advice or help will be very much appreciated. |
So sorry that your little guy is having these problems. I don't know what is meant by crab gate but he definitely needs to be evaluated by a vet. Hope there is an easy answer. |
This could be anything from liver to neurological. He definitely needs to be seen asap by a vet. So sorry he is so ill. :( Please keep us posted. |
Really, really glad to read you're taking him to the vet bc this sounds serious. Since you don't have insurance, do you have something like "Care Credit" like we have in the US? It's offered by most vet offices and it's a credit program where you can borrow money for vet care and then pay it back. |
Thanks for the replies, the crab gait was the term the vet used where the back legs veer to the side when walking. He's not doing this anymore just circling a lot. I'm not sure about the credit, it has not been mentioned by the vet thus far. Yogi has managed two barks today which are his first for about 4-5 days. His blood tests are due tomorrow so we will see how he is. Very sad to think a week ago he was running round like a normal young dog. |
The circling is usually neurological I had a cat that did that |
He sounds too ill for your to manage and likely needs help right away to prevent his suffering any more. If you cannot get something like Care Credit, family/friend loan or sell things such as computers, phones, jewelry, TV, cameras, etc., to get him immediate help, you could probably surrender him to a rescue organization through the vet's office in order to get your baby some badly needed help now before he suffers any more. This poor baby needs care immediately and you are the one who needs to act to see that he gets it, whatever it takes. |
Could your baby have gotten into something or did you possibly just treat for fleas or heartworms? His symptoms sound so serious that I am surprised he is having to wait until tomorrow to have blood work done?? I hope he's ok! |
Sorry to hear he is having problems. It's good you are seeing a vet for a full work up and hope you have a diagnosis soon.. It is normal to fear the worst when symptoms appear suddenly, however just keep hoping that it tuns out to be something less serious and easily treatable. The vet is the only one who will know. I wish you all the best in getting him back to normal. Keep us posted. |
Having had multiple yorkies in my home for some time, I wouldn't be able to provide all the necessary care without the assistance of Care Credit. I usually get 6 month interest deferred financing. I have looked into medical coverage for the fur babies, but have found that the premiums would be tantamount to just paying the Care Credit payment. I hope this little pup gets better soon. He seems too young for such issues. |
I am not sure what the UK has with credit help. Sending you good thoughts |
There is the PDSA (peoples dispensary for sick animals) where people on low income etc can get treatment and they only ask for a donation. Some vets will agree payments by instalments. Shirl |
