Seeking guidance
 
My beloved 11 year old Yorkie went for an injection but doctor found a heart murmur and X-Ray showed enlarged heart. I'm in shock and my grief is overwhelming. It's just us two and he's my whole world. I lost my previous Yorkie at 17 and was devastated but now I am so lost and can't stop crying. Doctor said lungs are clear and he appears just fine. He started a diuretic small dosage. Any info from others who have experienced this would be greatly appreciated. Can he live a year or two more? Hopefully more. What the best treatment? So many questions. Someone please help! I am so sad as I love my little guy so so very much. Thank you. His name is Monte.

Hello and welcome to YT. I am so sorry to read of the heartache you are going through and I send hugs and prayers to you and your Yorkie. I am going to ask admin to move this to the Sick & Injured / Emergencies Talk forum where you might get more views and better advice. I wish I had information for you, hopefully others with.

Hi and WELCOME to YT :)! Your Monte sounds just precious, and very, very loved. What was the vet's prognosis, long term, did he/she say? Did the vet recommend seeing a cardiologist or does he/she think Monte's case is simple enough to be managed by a generalist? You always have the option of seeing a cardio. It sounds like your vet doesn't think his heart issues are terribly advanced, given he only prescribed a mild diuretic to take some volume load off of the heart. Otherwise, if his issues advance/worsen, there are other more specific heart meds that could help, lots of options.

Vet said to come back in one month for ultrasound. Right now just a mild diuretic and 10 mg. of CoQ 10 daily. Monte is just fine I'm a mess. Can't imagine my life without him. I'm a 64 yr old man, 40 years teaching and guiding students and this has reduced me to a lost little boy. Its just us two. Thank you for your reassuring response. You're an angel too in giving me some hope.

So sorry about lil Monte, I had a pup at age 13 y/o diagnosed with an enlarged heart. Not gonna go there. Good luck in Monte's treatment, will keep you & Charlie in my prayers.

Hi and Welcome to YT!

First, X-ray is not a good way to determine heart size on a Yorkshire terrier. They tend to appear large for the size of their chest. Murmurs are also very common. Best suggestion I can give you is to go directly to a cardiologist and have Monte evaluated there.

My Peek A Boo was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and a murmur at the age of 5yo. He just passed this December at 17yo.

I am so sorry for the diagnosis of an enlarged heart in your precious yorkie. I have an almost 5 year old yorkie that was diagnosed last summer with an enlarged heart. She is on Vetmedin, Enalapril and Lasix twice a day with an added baby aspirin once a day to keep the blood pooling in the lungs thinned out. She is certainly not the same energetic puppy she was, but her meds have very much helped her. I pray both our babies live a long, happy life, despite their heart problems. Ask your vet about vetmedin. I think it does wonders! Best wishes to you!

This is true. For years, I had numerous vets tell me my dog had an enlarged heart. Took him to a cardiologist two years ago and she said misdiagnoses in small breeds happen all the time and he had a normal sized heart. He does have minor valve disease but he will die of old age before that becomes a problem. I second a visit to an ACVIM boarded cardiologist.

Forgot to add my dog is almost 14, and two years ago he saw the cardiologist. He's undergone anesthesia four times since then and is about to have a dental next month. The cardiologist really helped me to not be as scared once I knew his heart could take it. Watching her do the ultrasound was so cool too, we got to watch and go into the room with him.

Totally agree! I have had many pups with heart murmurs that were really nothing and I have also had pups with some cardiac issues that did very well on meds. Your best bet is a cardiac consult!! I would schedule an appointment with a board certified cardiologist. Your vet should know of one or you can search for one here:

I had a pup with congenital problems and so I wont compare. Like humans each problem is different, each symptom etc. When you are dealing with a heart concern you REALLY need to go to a cardiologist, yes they cost a bit more but they are the ones who can truly diagnose etc. I can't stress enough that you NEED a cardiologist here and also, a good vet would refer you as such, a great vet would insist on it....I'm so glad I have a great vet....good luck and keep us posted.

First welcome to YT. Your vet maybe very correct in an enlarged heart, but I like others would urge you, right now to go to a cardiologist. For sure ask your vet for their recommendation on a cardiologist. Don't worry that you might insult your vet, they should be quite on board with such a dedicated owner wanting a specialist consult.

There are some medications that can help with this condition, if the cardiologist agrees with your vets diagnosis of an enlarged heart.

I will also say the echiocardiogram is very neat to watch as well.

I will share with you the costs I assumed for this specialist consult. Now bear in mind I live in the 4th most expensive city in North America, the specialist consult was $175 and the echocardiogram $450.

If you have a good pet insurance plan, they might cover the costs of this.
