Wow! Had her surgery and doing well enough to come home today! Amazing! I pray for a very quick and total recovery. |
We just got home with Sprite a few minutes ago and she's settling in her crate. We're having a monster of a storm at the moment (got caught in it driving home) so she's a little agitated by the thunder & lightning. She looks great physically. Her head is shaved and she has a row of stitches midline down her scalp, and then two small incision sites on her left flank. You can see the outline of the shunt under her skin, but once she heals and her fur grows back it won't be noticeable. She has pain meds and a couple of antibiotics in addition to her seizure meds. Once the storm is over I'll take her outside and then try to feed her. She's been through a lot but she's a strong little thing!! |
Poor baby...so sorry about the storms. They are so scary to these little ones. I am sure she is happy to be home though. :) Continued prayers... |
So glad she is home. What a beautiful little girl. |
I am very happy to hear Sprite is home. Hoping the storm will pass soon and that you will enjoy a peaceful evening. |
My son (human) has a vp shunt and is on keppra for seizures. It's a very scary place to be. The shunt will help reduce the. Excess fluid her body cannot pass correctly. She may want to pee more frequently due to the fluid now being drained into her abdomen rather than lingering in her brain. I'd also make sure you are well aware if the signs for shunt failure. Very important. So glad your baby is home. |
Great, great, great!!!! So happy for Sprite! Good job Momma, she is super lucky to have you and I'm sure she will pay you back 100 fold. |
The neurologist has warned us about the signs of shunt failure so we are keeping a very close watch and yes, this whole process is frightening but she seems to be coping well so far. Thank you for sharing about your son Calimomma. Sprite will need to continue her seizure meds for now (keppra and phenobarbital), and if she's seizure free for six months then she will be tapered off of them. She also takes prednisone, which is causing her to urinate more frequently and we'll make sure we take her out even more now that she has the shunt. Sprite has been sleeping most of the evening. She wolfed down her supper, cuddled with us for a while and then crashed in her crate. The pain meds make her very sleepy. Thank you all so much for all your support. It really is helping :) |
I so happy to see that Sprite's surgery went well and that she's home with her family. Prayers and miracles really do come true, I'm so happy to see you've been blessed with both! Praying Sprite's feeling better today and wishing her a very speedy recovery. |
You are very courageous so that will help your dog so much to have such a confident owner!!! Keep up the good work and I pray your little Sprite has no post-op complications at all and is the greatest of successes of this type surgery. Keep spoiling and loving her for us all! |
Hoping all is going smoothly for Sprite and family.... |
Such wonderful news about Sprite. Healing thoughts and prayers coming your way. |

Looking for another Sprite update. How is our little warrior doing today? :) |
Overall Sprite is doing very well. She has been a bit lethargic this afternoon and evening and we are watching her closely. She is taking many meds including pain meds so that may be all it is. She is eating and drinking and doing her business so all systems are functioning! It 's actually pretty amazing that she looks so good so soon after a major procedure like this. She's walking around the house with no problems but she isn't wanting to tackle any stairs yet so we're carrying her up and down. I wonder if it's because she feels strange, or if the back flow valve from the shunt (which is actually located near the top of her head) is making her feel off balance. She's due for her last round of meds for the night so I better go take care of that. Thank you all again for your wonderful support! |
