Side Efffects of Clavamox and Ketoconazole? Macy had a dental Friday and did great but while she was asleep I asked the vet to look at her nails. Her paws have always smelled like Fritos but lately I have noticed what looks like black gunk at the beginning of the nail. She took a scraping and said she has yeast along with bacteria. She prescribed Ketoconazole for the yeast and Clavamox. Since Friday Macy doesn't want to eat much. At first I thought her mouth may be a little sore but even this morning she just picks at her food and walks away. Does anyone know if loss of appetite is a side effect of one of these drugs? |
Don't know why I didn't look up the drugs first before posting. I just looked them up and both can cause loss of appetite. The Clavamox seems pretty safe but now I'm concerned of what I have read about Ketoconazole and all the side effects. Has anyone else had to give Ketoconazole to treat a fungus? The possible side effects seem worse than the nail fungus. |
Poor Macy. I hope she gets her appetite back soon. Both of my boys have had Clavamax. It slowed them down a little, but did not suppress their appetite. I do not have experience with Ketoconazole. |
She finally poopied this morning and I think that helped her feel a little better. I'm a little concerned with the Ketoconazole. I'm going to stop the Ketoconazole and talk to the vet Monday. |
You can ask your vet to prescribe fluconazole (Diflucan) instead of ketoconazole. It is more expensive than ketoconazole and may have to be compounded for a yorkie but has less side effects. It may still affect the appetite though. Ketaconazole is about the oldest antifungal out there, and the cheapest, but does have a lot of nasty side effects. My yorkie took fluconazole for two years for a fungal infection called Valley Fever. The side effect of loss of appetite went away after a short time. I would advise you to give a liver protectant like denamarin any time you are treating your dog with an antifungal. They are all tough on the liver. Diana and Scooby |

Fluconazole has had a huge jump in price recently, but for a yorkie it shouldn't be that bad and definitely worth the switch. I'm glad your baby is feeling better. :) Diana and Scooby |
Don't know what I would do without YT and the valuable advice given here. Going to talk to vet Monday and ask about getting something else beside the Ketoconazole. Thank you all so much. |
Teddy had the same problem with ketoconazole. He took cerenia with it and we completed treatment but in the future I would use fluconazole instead. My other dog has been on ketaconazole about a dozen times and no side effects. |
