10 day puppy died any advice as to why? Very sad day at our house today, seemingly healthy puppy failed and died today. I would have said he was healthy as could be this morning. He started crying at about 10:30 and wouldn't nurse. I started with nutra cal and gave some mothers milk supplement from a can. He didn't improve so I took him to the vet, there he received fluids under the skin, and a broad spectrum antibiotic. His stomach was getting more and more distended. I believe he was defecating normally these past days his mother seemed to do a good job at it, he urinated when she was licking him before he died. He died later that day and he was definitely in discomfort or pain. This is my 6th litter and I never had this happened before. The vet though conscientious didn't have a clue and honestly doesn't see many litters. The emergency vet didn't open until 6 pm. Has anyone else had this happen to them or any words of advice to give me? Thank you in advance. |
I responded to your other post and did relate this had happened to me before when I first started out. Read up on everything you can get your hands on regarding "fading puppy syndrome", from reputable sources. Have your autopsy done to determine if this is a genetic malformation so you can decide if this occured from genetic from one or both parents, or if momma was inadvertantly given something during gestation that caused a malformation. You need to pull up gestational development (I see you are breeding so you more than likely have that already) and you can pin point exactly what week the developmental accident occured....you can easily back track and make sure you did not give any flea meds, or use a medicated shampoo, etc.....anything that you did during that week to momma, could have caused a malformed intestine.....you can pin point with great accuracy, what, when, and how the problem occured. Or it could just as easily be nothing anyone or anything did....it just happens sometimes....but you have to KNOW what happened so you can go forward confidently with your breeding program. |
Intussusception can happen in young pups, where a part of the intestine telescopes over itself. Hard to say for sure without an necropsy. |
Im so sorry for your loss |
Did you decide to have an autopsy done? Please keep us posted on what the problem was. |
