10 day old very sick Help please Hello to anyone out there I have a 10 day old baby who up to this morning was very healthy. Then he started to cry, and has been at it all day. Very swollen belly as time goes by. Did nutrition cal, won't eat, took to the vet...fluids under the skin, and broad spectrum antibiotics, he is getting weak. Tried to give him mothers milk replacement by syringe. Really think I'm loosing him but he's still hanging on. Any advice appreciated. |
I have no experience but hopefully someone that knows more will be on here shortly. Good luck |
I would call your vet and explain what's going on. Are take him to emergency vet. To little to mess around. |
Have you stimulated him to poo? |
Is the baby having bowel movements? Has momma been feeding him or have you? Does momma care for him and stimulate him to potty? Is he being kept warm and out of drafts, with warm formula if you are doing the feeding.....sounds like he has stopped digesting nourishment that is going in, with his little bloated belly. Does he have active bowel sounds? Years ago, when I first got into breeding, before I learned to tube feed, before I learned about "fading puppy syndrome".....I was loosing babies to something that exhibited symptoms like this....one of my mentors, a breeder/shower/judge living in Australia, a very well known lady named Jane Harvey, told me to get probiotics into each feeding....she had me add live culture yogurt to each feeding.....but that was after it was established there was no intestinal malformation that was causing baby to swell and bloat.....I really wish I could be more help....sometimes these little darlings just "fail to thrive" and you cant stop the slide downhill. I would answer the questions I asked in the beginning of my post, and go from there with help from your vet. Does this vet KNOW Yorkies? You may do better with an ER vet or a specialist.....you are going to have to decide how much you are wanting to spend to POSSIBLY save this little soul. First and foremost, you will need to know if there is a birth defect that is coming to play here....if this baby has a birth defect in his bowels or stomach, I am not sure you are going to be able to save him.....if you can assertain that there is no birth defect, then you attack the problem medically and you are going to have to partner with a very knowledgable vet or team of vets. I am praying for your baby and you...... |
Thank you for ALL your good advice. We did loose him and I just finished posting another thread for advice to try to keep this from ever happening again. I honestly think it may have been a systemic problem like I mentioned he seemed to be defecating though that is really hard to track as there were only two puppies in the litter. He was definitely bloated though. The only thing I didn't mention was that my mommy's stomach was pretty upset this last week though she was eating, just very picky at what she ate. That is normal after they eat all the yuck etc from the puppies... I wish I had a mentor here it seems like every other breeder here is so competitive and closed mouthed. So far I placed all my puppies through word of mouth or friends and family so it isn't like I was stealing their business... |
I am so sorry you lost your little man. I would have an autopsy done so you know what took his life. This is important on many different levels....especially if you have any more litters born from this same pair. Also, it may be something that will show up in the others as they get older.... Quote:
