Dew claw Hello all! It's been a while, but I need advice from yorkie people :) My baby boy has broken his dew claw, it's quite near the base of the nail and has been bleeding. It happened about 3 days ago, and after a google search I decided to leave it and see how he went on. All was fine, except he's caught it again today and it's twisted around :2omg:. It's stopped bleeding, but this time he's quite obviously miserable, ears back, hiding away and being very clingy at the same time (still eating though!) and just not himself. I've spoken to the vet and she said I can bring him in if I want, but just to see how he is. So, I'm asking you wise ones, what would you do? I'm not sure the vet could clip it off without causing him pain, but then it must be sore catching it all the time. I don't want to stress him out if they vet can't *really* help him. Puppies!!:cry: Thank you from both of us xx :) |
I think it would help to bring hi. To the vet, he probably needs antibiotics even only to be safe, also it may help to get him bandaged until the claw heals. If he is showing signs of any discomfort he could be in terrible pain, they do try to hide pain as much as possible so they won't be picked off in the pack, hope he feels better soon. |
A member here Mimimomo had one of her dogs rip a dew claw. You may want to PM her and ask her what she did. I think if I recall correctly that she had the vet remove it. Man poor dog. It must hurt like hell! |
Thanks to you both, you've just confirmed that I really should take him. I didn't realise they hide pain, you learn something new everyday! His eyes even look sad, poor baby :( |
Let us know how you get on. These wee ones are so tiny and unique but try to butch up like they are Mastiffs. |
Are the veins or nerves exposed? If there are he should have already been at the vet to be sedated and have them cut back then cauterized this happened to my yorkie a few years ago. He sounds like he is in pain so I would take him to the vet. |
Hello all, We've just been to the vet and had the nail clipped off, he used a special 'pen' to stop the bleeding and he's having a check-up next week. Dexter seems much better now, happily eating his chicken he got for being a brave boy. I know, minor injury, but I was so worried! Lol |
WTG Dexter! Glad to hear he did well. And good for you for doing the right thing and taking him in! |
