Elliott is sick again Elliott has not been feeling well the past couple days. He has not been eating a lot just a few bites here and there. What he has started doing that is out of the norm is drinking a lot of water. He went through a 16 oz bottle yesterday and that is causing him to pee a lot. He has never been a big water drinker so this is way out of the norm for him. He has MVD and is on the same meds and food he has been on since August. I took him to the vet yesterday and he changed his food to the Royal Heptic canned. He ate about 1/2 Tablespoon. I didn't want to give him a lot but he ended up throwing it up shortly after he ate it. There are no other symptoms really his eyes have been a little goopy and that is the only other thing that seems to be going on. Going back to the vet today, he breaks my heart when he is not feeling well they do have a way of looking at you with those little yorkie eyes. So any thoughts on what I should be looking for? any help you can all offer would be appreciated. Laurie |

I had to take Tink off Lactulose... after taking it for over a year she just quit eating. I believe that's one of the side effects of long term use. The first day I stopped it she started eating again... that was over a year ago and I haven't had to put her back on it since then. |
I am assuming they did blood work...any abnormalities? I hope they find out what is going on and he is back to feeling well soon. |
going back in today to do new round of Bile Acid. If you take them off of Lactulose and they have MVD how do they move the toxins out of their body? Don't they need the Lactulose to do that? |
My Teddy Bear had shunt surgery about a year ago and has some MVD. He is on moderate protein diet and no lactulose. I honestly thought they only used that for shunts, but I could be very wrong. He does have some tummy issues from time to time and we manage that with Pepcid which seems to help him. Has Elliott been to an internal med specialist? If so, I would have the vet fax results to them and consult with them. All of my pups who have been to a specialist follow up at my vet who consults with the specialist. Thank you all for your help. We do have a specialist that's who we went to for the biopsy and diagnoses. The vet and he work closely on his care. We are going to try the Pepsid and they said to add a little bit of low sodium chicken broth to the food to encourage him to eat. We will hopefully get over this bump soon. |
All of the tests are in and it appears that Elliott has Pancreatitis...he is on a pain med and anti vomiting med. Hopefully in the next few days he starts to feeling better...poor little man has been through so much it is so hard to see him in pain and not feeling well. It is going to be a cold snowy weekend here so lots of couch lap time for him in front of the fire :) |

Best Wishes I know it's tough. I have been through it several times. Defining the root cause will prove to be a very positive step in his future. A little advice if I may. Watch him closely when walking or out in the yard. Don't let him pick anything up to munch on. Diet, diet, diet. I'm sure your vet has him on a specialized low fat diet. High levels of fat can trigger an attack. I'm using a veterinary (Royal Canin) formula of potato and venison. It's keeping her weight in check but I have had to increase the volume of food due. She if fed four times a day to decrease the work of the digestive system and production a acid. Meds are 1.25 mg famotidine (pepsid) twice a day and 1.25 mg of prednisone every other day. Treatment is re-evaluated every three months, baring symptoms .We hope to further reduce the prednisone. Hope I was helpful. |

Thank you all for your concern, prayers and helpful information. Elliott was on IV fluids before they sent him home. He is eating better not drinking as much water but I have been putting chicken broth on his food to get him to eat. He is taking Pepsid and I am not sure on the fat content of his food since it is what was prescribed for his MVD. I will have to be more conscious of how much fat he is taking in also. He is still sleeping a lot but that is probably the pain meds. Hopefully this week he starts to feel better. Thank you all again :) |
You might want to consider a nutrition consult with a vet nutrionist. Often, when pups have multiple diagnosis, the RX foods can be an issue since each one is made for one condition. Perhaps your specialist can advise. Yes, the pain meds are probably making him sleepy. Hoping he will improve soon! |
Thanks LadyJane that was on my list of first things to do tomorrow was to find a vet nutritionist in my area. Poor little man...when they are so little and not feeling well it just breaks your heart. I took two days off of work last week to stay with him I was to afraid to leave him alone...I am hoping this week will be better for him and we can get back to our normal schedule :) |

Thank you LadyJane for the info...I was back to the vet with Elliott over the weekend as he was very sick again. We think it was due to the food. He was on Hills KD for the MVD and I wasn't even thinking and the vet never suggested changing that but it is very high in fat...he was throwing up again and general not feeling well.. They put him back on the Heptic canned but he does not like it. I have been trying to mix it with some Pumpkin or Sweet Potato and he still isn't having it. He is eating a little bit of the dry but only a few pieces here and there. I gave him the info on the telemed site and asked him contact them. If I understand it he has to contact them, or can I do that directly and do you know what the cost for a consult is for their services? I have been unable to find anyone locally thus far. Poor little man he has been resting no energy, I feel so bad for him. Thank you for all of your help. |

Thank You so much...I found the closest one in our area is Ames Iowa...I looked up his information on the website and have sent an e-mail. My regular vet while we are very happy with the care we have received so far, didn't seem to think this was necessary. He was sure we could figure this out between the two of us, but I don't want to wait until he is really sick again to figure this out. If he is not eating I see that as a serious problem at this point. So with that I will keep pushing until I get the answers I need. Just wanted to update on my little man...Elliott is doing very well. We consulted with nutritionist and I am doing a lot more cooking for Elliott. It is hard with him on a very, very low protein and fat diet but we are mixing his Heptic food with lots of home cooked veggies and he is really eating very well. It is a little time consuming but I am committed to making sure he is getting the nutrition he needs and that he is eating :) Thank you all for your great advice and caring thoughts. |
