Puppy Consistent Vomiting My 8 month old Yorkie vomits on a regular basis. It is usually HOURS after she eats so hard to pinpoint if it is diet related. A lot of times it is in the middle of the night. We now have her on prescription i/d food, but she still continues to throw up. Any ideas on what I can do to help with this? |
A GI specialist will be able to diagnosis what is wrong with your pup. If your vet can not refer you to a specialist, you can go to a vet school, where they will have cutting edge equipment and specialist vets that can get you on the correct path with this baby. |
If you have been to a regular vet and they are unable to figure out what is wrong, I would go to an internal med specialist...if your vet does not know one, you can do a look up at American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine > Home |
have you tried more small meals instead of big ones if that's what he is getting? I know if Jess ate too much and too fast she would vomit. I tried giving her small amount hand fed throughout the day until she matured and could regulate on her own.. she liked to inhale without chewing and hours later Id see a big pile of unchewed regurgitated kibble on the floor. |
Update on Sadie Jo Sadie continues to throw up and now there is the added factor of diarrhea and increased urination. We did some labwork and the vet saw some results she didn't like. So we're on antibiotics and something for the diarrhea as well as anti-nausea meds. She was supposed to get spayed on the 4th of Feb but we have to push that back. When she is in for the spay they are going to do exploratory surgery on her stomach to see what is up and take a biopsy of the stomach tissue for testing. This is getting expensive!!!! Wish I would have purchased insurance BEFORE this was a pre-existing condition! :-) |
Did your vet X-ray her? |
Xrays Yes, she spent a day in the hospital getting x-rayed throughout the day. They thought they saw a blockage and were waiting to see if it was passing. It looked like things weren't moving through her digestive system correctly. By the end of the day it seemed to have passed enough, so they sent her home with instructions to monitor the vomiting. She did better for a few weeks, but it is worse now. There have been a LOT of changes in her life over the past 2 months. It seems whenever there is a change in her routine she throws up, even if it was something fun, like playing with a classmate from puppy class. So we are trying to ascertain if there is really something wrong or if she just has a nervous stomach. It is hard to know at this point, especially now that there is the diarrhea added in, which is a new thing. For now she is on Zantac, an antibiotic for the infection (which we are waiting on the final labwork to figure out exactly what it is) and something for the diarrhea. So poor thing is sleepy all the time. We will find out on Monday the results of the testing and then decide from there when to schedule the spay/exploratory surgery. |
How about a consult with a board certified internist as I suggested? If you can manage it, it might be a better option than just jumping to an exploratory surgery. Second opinions are always good to have! If you cannot do that, I understand, but I am throwing it out there. Sometimes they might initially seem expensive but I have found they often cut to the chase a lot quicker than regular vets and they try minimally invasive first. |
Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately Delaware is pretty small and there are no internists anywhere near me so that is not really an option at this time. She is already going to be on the operating table for the spay so they thought they would just swing over to the tummy and take a look while they were in there anyway. |

Is there any way you can get her to the University of Pennsylvania, University of Maryland, Virginia Tech these are all a few hours away but would be well worth the trip. This condition has been going on for too long, and for a vet to even be considering doing a spay on this pup in the shape she's in is very scary to me. These pups are very small, and to attempt to do 2 surgeries back to back on a dog with an underlying unknown condition is horrifying to me. (I am a Retired Vet Tech). If these vet schools are too far, please contact Yorkies, Inc. they are a rescue organization on the East Coast and ask them to recommend a vet/specialist closer to you. |
To add: Her symptoms are those of a dog with a blockage. The blockage may have just shifted further down. With a blockage, anything she eats will be vomited up, and on the other side past the blockage will be diarrhea, as water may be the only thing able to pass through. Another option would be to get her to an Emergency Vet, asap. Many ER vets are a bit quicker at diagnosing and treating pets as they see emergencies all the time (I was an ER Vet Tech for 4 years). I am very concerned for your pup as you have described her as being very lethargic... this is not a good thing and I really think it would be best if she could be seen tonight... Praying for you and your little one... |

I see your point about the spay being elective and I am willing to hold off. Sadie is in a lot of pain today. I was evaluating what to do about seeing a specialist, but it may be answered for me at this point. Waiting for the vet to call me back. We may have no choice but to go in surgically tonight if she has a blockage. I don't want to put anything off anymore if we find something wrong. She just keeps crying and crying. I would rather do something less invasive, but I am not finding any luck here in DE. I have called a few other vets and they are not much help. Don't know how long it would take me to get into UPENN, and with her being in pain don't know what to do at this point. She is lethargic and only eating about 1/3 of what she used to. |
Not sure what you have done, but perhaps this will help if you have not gone to someone yet: Emergencies If you have an emergency Call 215-746-8911 Emergency services are available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week Ryan Hospital 3900 Spruce Street Philadelphia, PA 19104 |
Kat is right, she knows what she's talkin about, she used to be a vet tech. I have personally gone through a blockage w/Momo & it involved constant vomiting & diarrhea...he even threw up water, he couldn't hold anything down. He ended up having surgery to remove a queen palm seed which was enlodged in the entrance of his small intestine. I'm wondering if something was there, but later it passed into the intestines, it's still somewhere in her intestines & causing the vomiting & diarrhea? That's what happened to Momo, I was sure he ate the palm fruit along w/the seed & we did an xray in the morning. Saw something in his stomach & by the time we went to an emergency specialty vet a few hrs later, it had moved from his stomach, it wasn't in the xray anymore. So I was confused & scared, the vet said he'll try different anti-nausea meds & see if it'll pass. Also did endoscopy & only saw severe ulcers on his stomach lining. They also did colonoscopies & ultrasound & saw nothing. On day 7 (yes, he was there suffering for 7 days:(, only thing keeping him alive was the iv) the vet felt the seed when he palpated & did the surgery. It was hell for both of us, never would wish this on anyone. If I had not been so scared, I would've just told them to go open him up the 1st day, bc of my indecisiveness, I let him suffer for a whole week. Just thinking about it breaks my heart again. I hope your girl will be ok! |
You really need to have her seen asap... Here's a list of vets in your area: https://www.google.com/search?q=Vete...ss&ie=&oe=&rlz= Just click on the link, get on the phone, have her seen as an emergency (as she is in pain), and get her in so a vet can help her. |

Sadie out of Surgery Thanks everyone for your advice. I ended up staying with my vet in Harrington, DE. I have confidence in her. She did very well with my other dog. I called a few other vets last night and no one offered any solutions beyond what Dr. Little was already doing. We ended up doing emergency surgery this morning. Good thing we went in. She was in surgery for over three hours!!! There was no blockage, but there is a lot of plaque/polyp like tissue in her intestines. They were unable to remove it all because there was so much of it they would have to remove the whole intestine! I was worried about that, but the second surgeon on the task assured me that they feel it is probably just inflamed tissue, that can be controlled with medication. They think she could have irritable bowel syndrome. They took samples of the intestinal gook as well as the stomach and will send that off to make sure there is not any cancer or other disease. Will take a week to get those results back. They also have concern that she may have A-typical Addison's or Hodgkin's disease based on her lethargy, but I personally think that is just because she was in pain and not eating much. Needless to say the bill is astronomical! :-( I checked into a few assistance sites. Found one that may pan out. Here's to keeping my fingers crossed....... |
Thanks for the update. Prayers for a speedy recovery. |
Praying for your sweet girl and a speedy recovery, and good biopsy results. Keep us posted please! Have you applied for Care Credit for vet services? Also see if this is a genetic issue, the breeder may be willing to help. |
Oh my goodness You are all so on it.....cudos to you all...and god bless! In the meantime what do you feed.... I find canned pumkin soothes and white chicken and rice with a little broth is gentle...... I will send prayers for speedy recovery. |
Sadie Home/Diet Thanks for the well wishes! Thanks for the suggestion about the pumpkin. I will try that. She is currently on prescription I/d food, but they also said to give her boiled chicken and rice. She doesn't like rice very much, but will eat it if there is something mixed in. I will try mixing in some pumpkin. My big dog LOVED rice so new experience to have a dog that avoids it like the plague. :-) She is home as of this morning. Has quite the incision! She was absolutely traumatized with the whole experience. I finally got her to calm down and go to sleep. She is not digging the cone very much. :-) We should have the biopsy results sometime next week. The nurse told me today that they think what they found was inflamed lymph nodes. She said dogs have lymph nodes in their intestines similar to what humans have in the neck. They feel hers were inflamed due to irritable bowel syndrome and acid, but they want to make sure it wasn't anything more serious so sent the samples off to make sure. |
Pumpkin is great for keeping a dog regular!! It loosens their stool if they are constipated and helps harden it if they've got diarrhea. I keep it on stock for my older pup who has Irritable Bowels. He doesn't throw up that much, but stress will cause him to have an upset stomach and a bout of diarrhea. Usually long car rides and trips to strange places will do it for him. I can tell he has an upset stomach because he won't eat his am meal and his stomach will start gurgling and it's audibly loud. He will then run to the door and need to go outside because he has the runs....and back in...and back out....and then he rests for the day. I give him pepto to help his tummy. Usually by the evening, he will eat his dinner. At this point, I usually make him chicken and rick. It used to be a lot worse...he would get upset over more things...and his episodes would sometimes last for a week...and/or it would go away and flare up again. For about 6 months, it seems he was getting an upset stomach a few days a week. He hardly ever at breakfast. Nowadays, when it happens, he usually only has diarrhea for a day and is back to normal by the evening. I've started giving him a concoction of meds when I know he's in for a stressful day. I give him Petctin, Benadryl and an Herbal Calming liquid before he gets into the car and it definitely helps. The last few trips to my parents have been great. We made it the whole trip there and back with no diarrhea and I managed to get him to eat a little food while he was at my parents. This is a major improvement for us!! Hopefully the vets will find out what is wrong with your little one, and if it is IBS, hopefully you can find a way to manage it. Have you looked into the calming collar?? I haven't tried it yet, but i hear it works great for anxious dogs!! The thunder shirt seems to be a hit or miss, as I've heard some dogs do well with it and with others, it's a waste of money. Acupuncture is another homeopathic remedy I thought about trying when his tummy aches were more regular. Praying you can find something that works for you!! |
Hope she is ok. Hope your baby is ok. I had a standard poodle with Addissons Disease. Let me know if that ends up being the diagnosis as he lived with it for 8 years. I will be happy to tell you about our experience. Hopefully you won't have to deal with that. :( best of luck with your baby. |
Oh a cone If the poor little thing seems too traumatized by it you may try onesies. I did for my Baby girls spay and she seemed comforted by something around her and healed very fast. Also my vet recommended aloe Vera gel to sooth the incision . She healed very fast . Have you tried yogurt or cottage cheese , too. Comfort , comfort, comfort......hold , hold, hold. Try to omit startling sounds that may make them jump. As much as I tried to get mine used to sounds , she still prefers quiet when she sleeps, preferably me by her side.....it's just soothing to them. Prayers to you, things will get better. And if she don't like pumkin mixed try alone on your fingers. I introduced all new foods on my fingers. |
So glad your baby is home....hope all news is good news!!:) |
Hoping it comes back benign! If you go to the asian section in your grocery store, they have a small bag of white rice called CalRose Botan. It's japanese sticky rice for making sushi. It cooks up really fast, it's soft, sticky & they love it! Rice is not the best for upset tummy, it will just go right through their digestive system, but it is bland. Pumpkin might be a better choice, even sweet potato. |
Problem Found We have found the problem, finally! The biopsy results came back yesterday and turns out, Sadie is allergic to something. The lymph nodes in her intestine were very swollen due to an allergy. So now to figure out what it is she is allergic to....We are starting with the diet. So she is off EVERYTHING she was eating prior and on a completely new prescription diet. Hopefully this will solve the problem and she will be back to normal soon. Thankfully she is loving the new food and no vomiting since just after her surgery! Yeah!!! She is very picky so I was so happy she liked the new food right away. I have really enjoyed my week off with her while she recuperates from surgery. I will miss her next week when it is back to work. :-( Also on a positive note, the antibiotics have cleared her urinary tract infection, which in turn has solved the potty training issue!!! It wasn't that she wasn't getting it, it was that she couldn't help it. I meant to say something to the vet about the frequency of her urination but then this whole major issue of the vomiting set in so it all got set aside. So we didn't know she had an infection way back when. She has only had one accident in the house in 2 weeks! Well, poopie is another matter, but I know Yorkies have issues with that, so we'll keep working, but no more wee-wee messes!!! I am sooo happy about that. I thought I was a failure and she would NEVER get it. :-) |
Fantastic news! I hope she'll continue to do well. If you want to read up on food intolerance/sensitivity, Dr. Dodds has a saliva test called NutriScan: NutriScan Food Sensitivity and Intolerance Test for Cats and Dogs I did the test for Turbo bc he was throwing up yellow bile all the time. I thought he had an empty stomach, so I gave him a snack b4 bedtime...didn't work. Split his meals into 3 as advised by vet...didn't work. Did numerous blood tests, urinalysis, diabetes test, bile acids test, xrays...everything came back w/in normal limits. Was even on antacid meds (I think it was tagamet? & pepcid a/c)...they didn't help either! Finally, someone had posted about NutriScan test here (Thank you Wanda!) & got Turbo tested. He was intolerant of chicken, turkey, venison & white fish. All the proteins I've been giving him! Since then, we avoid the proteins he's sensitive to & he has not thrown up yellow bile or food! |
