Worms?! I posted recently that my 10 week old puppy ingested cat feces in the back yard. He didn't get sick from it or anything and seemed normal yesterday but tonight he pooped on his puppy pads and there were white worms in his stool. They were about a centimeter long and flat and white and still moving! I'm so freaked out right now. My husband and I are taking him to the vet first thing in the morning, but do any of you have any idea what this could be? Also, is there anything I should do about cleaning areas where he was laying in the house? He was sleeping on my blanket with me just before he went to the bathroom. I'm really worried about something parasitic maybe lingering and re infecting him after he is treated. Never dealt with this before or had a puppy before. Super scared!! |
What you describe sound like tape worms. The vet can dose for them. They die when exposed to air and look like grains of rice. If they are tape worms they are actually caused by swallowing fleas. Don't be too upset. It is not uncommon. Get the vet to do a fecal and treat for fleas if it is tape worms. |

I do the same thing when one of mine is sick. I can spend hours looking for answers. The vet will be able to help. usually just one dose of medication. If you kept the stool, double bag it and refrigerate then take it with you. It will save a charge for a fecal. |

No need to worry. The worms die when exposed to air. You will for some reason see them more at night and clinging around the butt but they will not reinvest since they die pretty quickly. It would be good to wash the dog bedding as it's the fleas that cause this and they do lay eggs.Ask the vet about some flea control. If you don't want to use a topical treatment ask about comfortis. it's a pill and I have used it with great success but I don't know if it is safe for puppies. Maybe someone who has some flea control suggestions for Yorkies will chime in. I am a new Yorkie mom but she is a rescue and older. I have always had larger dogs and am leaning too. |
Sounds like tapes to me. Zoey came with tape worms too. This is gross but it happened. Zoey has always slept with me from day one. One night I felt something on my chest and touched it and it felt like a tiny piece of snot. Yucky! It stuck to my finger and since it was the middle of the night I just flipped it off my finger onto the floor. A few days later I was at the vets for ear mites (yes, she came with those too) and the vet noticed the dead tapes on her bum. One dose of meds took care of the tapes and one dose for the ear mites. I have never gotten over the fact take a worm was on my chest. |

It really makes me wonder what kind of conditions he was living in BEFORE we got him. The breeder lead me to believe he was well taken care of but between his dirty dog syndrome with the crate, and ear mites (he had those too, really bad), and now this... UGhhh |
Hey everyone. Just wanted to update you all and let you know Logan is alright :) we went to the vet and it was in fact tapeworms. They gave us 30 mg of virbantal for him to take half today and the other half in 3 weeks. We have his 12 week check up and shots next week so they're going to check his stool again then. But all should be fine now. I'm still so confused about how he got them. He's been fine for two and a half weeks and never runs around outside without me. But they said it's not likely to be from the cat poop he ate. I'm getting more gray hairs over this puppy! Haha. Thanks for the replies!! I feel so much better now *exhale* |
