Encephalitis Diagnosis I wanted to give everyone an update on my Biewer baby. He was diagnosed in mid-December, 2013 with encephalitis. He has made a fair improvement with the drugs he is taking, but it is not as good as I had wished. However, he is not in pain and seems to be stable. I have been told that this disease is incurable and fatal, and it is only a matter of time. It is heartbreaking. He is the sweetest dog I've ever had, and it is so unfair - he is only 2 1/2 years old. I am hoping for the longest remission possible, but I am trying to be realistic at the same time. It has now been almost 6 months since diagnosis. Again, very heartbreaking. Anyone out there with any advice on new meds or anything at all? |

I don't have any advice, but just wanted to wish you both well. |
I am so sorry you have been hit with this diagnosis. The only thing I can say is that I have seen dogs live for a few years and some not so long. I am encouraged that he sounds to be stable and has been for a few months. Yes, I agree, it is so unfair. It always saddens me when I hear of one. I will keep you and your baby in my thoughts and prayers. |
Did anyone experience any other symptoms with this disease or any other odd first signs that something was wrong with your babies? |
How is your yorkie doing? How was the encephalitis diagnosed? i have a yorkie and a maltese and the maltese was diagnosed with maltese encephalitis but by defualt. he had an MRI but stopped breating in it and could not get the spinal tap fluid. He is doing better since they put him on prednisone. but he has gained soooooo much weight. he was 3.5 lbs now he is 5.8 lbs. he was on 5 mg pred , now down to 3.5 an azthioprane liquid. the neuroligist said encephalitis used to be 6 months to live but with azthioprane it would give 6 years. my dilemma now is do we take him off everything, the weight is NOT good for him and he is starving all the time. he said we could take him off and see ... he has not concrete diagnosis since we could not do the spinal tap and we dont think he should go under gain to do it just to get a diagnosis ... any thoughts? |

Was your pup diagnosed with GME or NME? There is a difference. Sometimes they can tell without the spinal tap by the lesions on the brain but to be 100% you need the spinal tap. Do not take him/her off the pred. There is a website called "New GME Dogs" devoted to all pet parents fighting this disease. It is a yahoo website. I am surprised your maltese is just taking the pred because they usually have them on more medication. There is a leading neuro out of Boston named Dr. Sisson who specializes in this disease. I would encourage you to go on that website with any questions you may have. They are extremely knowledgeable & willing to share everything they know which is a lot! Good luck. Bobbie Jo |
