HELP liver shunt dog won't eat I have a 2 year old tiny rescue that just will not eat any dog food we try. What human food can I feed her to get her passed this until I can find a recipe suitable for her? She is only 3 lbs. Thanks |
Has she had surgery? I believe if she has a shunt, eating will make her feel poorly so that may be why or is it that she does not like the food you need to feed for the shunt? |
she has not had surgery. She will eat her treats but not the dog food. We've tried Hills L/D. Royal Canin Reduced protein, Halo Spot's Stew chicken |
My Cali has a very mild case of MVD and I feed her canned California Natural lamb and rice and Weruva. I hope you can get her to eat. |
I would speak with the vet. |
In a pinch, I've fed mine Chicken and rice (1:1), noodles, cottage cheese, green/string beans, Chicken baby food (not turkey, too high in purines). Best to add any of these to her low protein diet to try to entice to eat the right food too. Chicken is around 22% protein, but mixed with the other things, the Total protein for the whole meal will be less than 18% or so, so within most recommendations for LS. There is a diet or two on the University of Tennessee LS website: http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs...rShuntDiet.pdf |
You say she is a rescue. Does that mean you will get the surgery done for her? |
My little man has MVD and we feed him the Hills Perscription KD canned and leave the dry out to free feed. He has done very well and loves it. We take the can and divide into 3 pieces and that covers 3 days then each piece is divided into 4 so he gets 4 small meals a day with his meds. He may not be eating because he doesn't feel well after eating the sooner the shunt is taken care of the better for him it will be...good luck |
