New here & need help Hi everyone, I'm new here. Had no idea this even existed until I was searching medical info about my yorkie Dublin. He is 3, this past weekend he seemed to become paralyzed in his hind legs. Saturday he began shaking, I just thought he was cold we had a snow storm. Sunday he was limping slightly. Monday he couldn't walk using his hind legs, I brought him to my vet who immediately referred us to a Er specialty Animal hospital. Upon their exam and MRI which was $$$, they said he has a sever herniated disk. To my knowledge he suffered no trauma that would cause this. He is constantly by my side. They said surgery is our only option which is $6000. Right before christmas? Perfect timing!i was searching online, seems like other yorkies have this and can hang on with steroids. That's the route we chose short term.... Get him moving, out of pain, have my 2 girls that adore hike spend the holidays wight their little man then takeit from there. We do not have pet insurance, wish we did. Does anyone have advice or can share a similar story? Please And thank you! |
Well with people as well as dogs surgery seems to be the answer. Wouldn't want to suffer with that again myself as I did have it a number of years ago. Seems like you just can't get away from the pain and then there is the risk of damaging the nerves. Not good.:eek: |
Hi Allison I'm Lisa and I'm kinda new here too. I had a similar situation happen with my max. He wasn't paralyzed but was walking around like he was dizzy and bumping into things. When taken to our vet he put him on prednisone and a muscle relaxer. And said surgery may be needed if this didnt help. Of course we don't have doggy insurance. I'm a naturalist as much as I can be and don't like steroids to be used for a long period of time. I did some research on some herbs and have switched over to that. Max is fine and is a lot better. It's very important that your baby not jump up and down on furniture. I have a hard time keeping max from that. I have a PAC and play pen I used for my grandchildren I put him in when i can't watch him. He doesn't mind me putting him in it. We gave it where he can still be in the same room with us. The herbs are working, I also took him off all commercial dog food and I make his food every week with added grains and oils. I go to a website that is very informative on herbs and foods for your baby. Type in the dog whisperer. Her name is Karen and she lives in Ottawa Canada. Hope this helps. |

Thank you, I will check that put. The doctor put him on steroids and pain meds. I have a sling that I slide under his belly so he can walk with his front legs and gontomthe bathroom, this is our first night home with him. Kinda stressing with the holiday stuff but I will bring him with us everywhere in his crate so he's not out of my sight. My poor baby! Thanks for responding, |
