Hepatic encephalopathy hello everyone I haven't posted in quite some time. I'm having an issue with Mandy she's almost 9 years old she just had a dental16 teeth pulled about a month ago we have concerns that she is not doing well for a albumin levels are off as well as hEr.cholesterol. My question is after the blood tests are being sent to Cornell.when I have a better idea if it is some type of liver issue.what I basically want to know is diet related has anyone been able to control this with diet with her your Yorkie. |
Yes it can be controlled with low protein diets and meds (Lactulose) in most cases. Blocked bile ducts have similar symptoms and BW results, or it can be a combination od issues. Best of luck with the testing... |
I think you need to have a diagnosis before you will know whether diet and meds will help long term. Has your vet advised a diet for now while the testing is going on? You need to know what has caused the encephalopathy. If it is due to a single shunt, surgery can correct it. Good luck....please keep us posted. Prayers for Mandy. |
Hepatic Encephalopathy is an emergency condition that needs to be controlled, if not it can lead to seizures and death. Lactulose is given every hour until diarrhea happens then skip a dose and give the normal dose with food. If the dog is having seizures from toxic blood, Lactulose can be given in an enema to get the toxins (ammonia) out of the blood and stop the seizures. Valium/Diazepam will not stop this type of seizure. Best to discuss this with your vet, as Lactulose is by prescription, and you should have it on hand if your dog has symptoms of HE. Liver tests can take days or longer to get results, with HE you will not be able to wait, treatment must start ASAP. Get the HE controlled, then continue with testing to find the cause. |
Yes, it does need to be stabilized and controlled but my impression here is that the op was asking about long term control. So, my thoughts were that the pup is now stable and they are waiting on test results. I was responding to that alone...long term control of the liver (hepatic) issue that is causing the encephalopathy. No one can answer that for certain until they have that diagnosis. |
Yes thanks we have no clue what she has at this point. This all started after blood testing before her dental when her bloods levelS for cholesterol and albumin were abnormal however she was not showing any symtoms of HE. That was any concern until after the dental. I am doing research on this so I was curious to know if anyone had a Yorkie that is being fed the low protein diet long term. I am not saying she has HE at this point. I appreciate the knowledge and experiences with this that others. I will keep in touch and appreciate the prayers :) |

My boy has liver disease and was suspected of having HE last year. There is a lab test (blood) that can check ammonia levels to determine whether your dog has probable HE. I think we had to fast him overnight and have the blood draw first thing in the AM and it was not an inexpensive test. He tested negative and did not need lactulose. To answer your question though, my little guy has been on a low protein diet for years now for another health issue. He does fine with the low protein. You just have to be careful to balance the diet to regulate the protein and also maximize calories to keep the weight on. I find it easier to home cook fresh food for him, but there are commercial prescription diets available that will also meet those needs. I hope you are able to find an easy solution for your girl. Liver shunt success!!! Thanks everyone for the responses. I am sorry that I did not give an update on Mandy's condition. She does have Liver shunt Her bile acid test came back off the charts that surprised the vet. I have done allot of research into the diet for the liver shunt dogs and have seen extraordinary results/ changes in Mandy's condition. I have had the bile acid tests done 2 times now and have decreased significantly with The Latalose and diet. I feed her a low protein home cooked diet I opted for this after I saw the garbage that was in the Hills food. I purchased a few cans and decided to research the best simple home cooked. I give Mandy Salmon, brown rice sweet potatoes and broccoli sometimes Kale is mixed in. I also feed her a bit of plain yogurt and cottage. I also mix in organic carrots too. I also give Mandy Latalose 3 times a day in her food. WOW what I miracle Mandy is one of those cases where she should not have survived her nine years with this. Her Bile acid test decreased by 100 points. The vet has 3 liver shunt cases and these dogs are on the Hills I/D and they are not doing as well as Mandy, her neurological issues have almost become non exsistance she is much more playful and puppy like now what a change !!! It has been about 3 months now. Its does not take a lot of extra time to do this and its worth it just freeze the food. |
