Yorkie with liver shunt Hi, About month or two my yorkie pup started to act very weird. One night after throwing up she started shaking and couldn't walk. We took her to emergency room. After her blood work our vet told us that she has liver shunt. He give us lactulose and told us to give it when she's going to have symptoms again. About two weeks after I noticed her head shaking a little so I treat her with medicine for 3 day 3 times per day. Besides diarrhea she didn't have any other symptoms. Today I noticed she's shaking a lot so I give her medicine. She was running around a lot but you could see that she's not herself. Now after two hours of constant running and falling she's resting. I didn't go to vet because it was closed already. But the last time he told me to just look at her. I didn't have any idea she's supposed to have a special died. All I'm feeding her is blue dry food and can from fresh pet(shop rite fridge). I have no idea what to do:( how to help her when her symptoms come again and especially what to feed her. I'm looking for help. What are her chances to live long and health live? What kind of died she should have? Are they any medication she should have? She is 6months now. I probably made very big mistake by breeding her mom with another yotkie. Jasmine ( mommy) had 3 puppies and Bella was the third one out of the litter. During her first 2 months after feeding she almost every time threw up. Vet told us that's because she's eating to fast. Other two puppies are healthy. Please if you can provide me with information I should know. |
So sorry to hear your pup is sick. I have no experience with liver shunt but many others here do so I will bump this so one of them can give you more information. |
Do you know what tests the EC did? You really cannot definitively diagnose a liver shunt without more than blood work. They could have a general idea of course...and yes lactulose is given and usually a prescription diet. You can get that from your regular vet. It sounds like puppy needs to be seen by an internal med specialist...and I would suggest sooner rather than later. If this is a liver shunt, only a surgical repair is going to help her. After surgery to correct a shunt, pups do usually live a long life. That is unless of course there are complications. The most important thing right now is to get her on the right food and get a work up done so that you have a definitive diagnosis and plan. Vet told me that her blood work isn't that bad. Vet requested liver chemistry and She had low blood sugar and everything was normal besides ALK phosphatase 134 when normal is 5-131. I asked him if I should do another test in a couple weeks to see if she's better. He said just to look at her and to give medicine when she has symptoms. He said not to worry but now I'm reading everywhere that within one year dogs with liver shunt die. |

I think she had it done. On a paper I got it it says "bile acid, resting. 1.6 with normal <10.0" |
Plus he told me to give it to her only when she has symptoms for no longer than 3 days. Plus daily nutritions for low sugar. He said it's very good that she's playing etc she was trying to play even when those symptoms appear. He told me not to worry that she's gonna be fine but it breaks my heart to see her falling and shaking. |
Hello I just wanted to let you know that my little one was diagnosed with liver shunts. She was put on lactulose, metrodinzole and Prescription Hill Hepatic LD diet. She is doing fine. I tried the royal canine but that didn't agree with her tummy so now she is back on LD. Anyway she was diagnose about a year ago. She is an older pup. She was 12 yrs old when she was diagnosed. Surgery is not an option for her. Even though she is doing fine, every now and then she will have an "episode". Before she was diagnose, she had these "episodes" almost every two weeks. Now she has had maybe 3 in the last year since she was put on medication and her diet was changed. With liver shunts, you should at least see if it is operable. If not, with the proper medication and diet, your little one can live a full life. |

My little one also was diagnosed with a liver shunt. She had it surgically repaired 5 years ago and is doing great. I'm not sure why the vet would give you lactulose unless he suspected a shunt. I'm no vet, but I don't think these "episodes" you describe are normal. I would have to take her to a specialist and try to find out what was causing the problems. Good luck - we're sending prayers and positive thoughts your way! |
