Patent Ductus Arteriosos (PDA) 16 wks Yorkie Hello, Today my 16 week old darling 2.5 lb. Yorkie was definitively dx'd with PDA - Patent Ductus Arteriosos, a shortly fatal condition if left untreated. We live on Eastern Long Island and I have been advised the nearest specialist who performs this procedure is in Stamford, Ct. The dr. in Ct. is not readily available for an appt. This bill is already nearly $500 and that is the tip of the iceberg. I will need some kind of payment plan and don't know if vets are amenable to such an arrangement. I have had horses all my life, but they stayed pretty healty, the vet bills were always manageable. This is different. Does anyone know of a cardiologist on LI who performs the surgery to correct PDA? Heartbroken. |

I don't know anyone in your area. Just want to let you know that PDA is a very fixable condition. We have had them repaired in foster pups who did fantastic after the surgery! In the meantime, you might want to apply for Care Credit...many specialists accept it and often it is at no or very low interest. I'm so sorry about your pup. I travel about 22 miles to see Dr. Jay Wen at Hampton Veterinary Hospital, and he is amazing. Once your pup is well, I highly recommend him. Over the past fifteen yearsI have met many people who travel to his practice from the tristate area, many even further than that. I will call tomorrow to see if they can recommend anyone. Have you considered taking your baby to the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan? They have excellent doctors and I think they are reasonably priced. I realize that's far from you, too. Thank you everyone for your informative replies. Hampton Bays is very close, so I will likely give him a try after the dust settles. I would rather go into the city than take the ferry to Stamford, especially if there are complications. Lisaly has replied with some resources that look promising. I think I will take her into Manhattan to get the best care, after all, that's what I do with myself and Penny deserves the best! Also, thanks for the finance link. That may come in very handy. I think you will get some very good advise from Lisaly about vets in your area that can help your baby. Praying for you and your baby, for an uneventful, uncomplicated surgery and strength and comfort for you....you can get through this with you pup....be strong, take it step by step, and it will work out for you. Now, as a breeder, MY concern is also for the puppy, also from a different angle....have you contacted your breeder??? This is a congenital heart defect, and she should be standing with you, by you, helping you with vet bills and emotional support....some breeders would be refunding part of the purchase price, along with all the medical bills. Please contact your breeder and tell her what has happened and see what she is going to do for you! |
