Bentley went to the vet On Sunday, Bentley wouldn't relax, panting with tongue curled…was terrible. He has been on prednisone the past two weeks for itching. Off to the vet, he was just so uncomfortable. Not coming on YT and seeing a comparison of what he went through in June that I wrote here…same exact thing. He was prescribed Valium for if this happens again. Since looking up Prednisone side effects today…I think Bentley has a reaction to it…anxiety, extreme thirst etc. For those of you who may be offered Prednisone for you pups…please know of these side effects…there are many. I will never have Bentley on it again. I feel the vet should have known about the side effects and what happened in June this year after looking at his records. I will be looking for another vet as this should have been noted by the vet and not by me. Just so sorry Bentley went through this…but never again. |
Poor Bentley. :( Both of my boys have been prescribed prednisone in the past. Increased thirst is very common. Strangely, Teddy stopped drinking and got very sick. We discontinued the med and will never use it on him again. Praying Bentley feels better and can get some relief from the itchies. |
Kristin, I will never have Bentley on prednisone again…I think the vet should have caught that it was causing the problem and not that it was just an anxiety thing and prescribe Valium. Bentley had a few prednisone tabs to take but I have stopped them. |

I also agree that the vet should have had notes in the chart to recall Bentley's previous reaction. |
Poor Bentley! Glad you caught why he isn't feeling well and hope he feels much better soon. Hugs to your little man. |
An update on Bentley. Last night he couldn't get settled just kept walking quickly back and forth. Was up with him from 2:30am to 5:30am and then gave him half a Benadryl to try to get him relaxed. He sleeps with me and kept turning all the night. Today he didn't want to eat his morning food but he seems a little more calm. What a mess this has been for him. After he had prednisone in June he has lost a lot of hair and it has come in coarse, another side effect of prednisone is hair loss which I didn't know. Even went to the vet to ask what could be causing it and no one knew. Since vets give this drug out it seems without pause…they should tell us all the side effects and let the owners make an informed decision. Thank you for thinking of Bentley…it is greatly appreciated to have you there. |
Dyan, are we completely sure it's the prednisone reaction? |
Karen, all of the side effects I found on prednisone fit. Bentley may be one of the dogs that it reacts this way. When we as owners put our concerns to the vets I do believe they should know what drug he was on and the effects it had. I shouldn't have had to go seek info and find out answers that the vet should have readily available. You and all of us on here do all we can for our furkids, birds, cats etc. and it gets upsetting to have something that could have been prevented happen. |
Awww poor Bentley. I just hate it when they are uncomfortable. Hope he's back to himself very soon. |
Bentley is becoming more calm. He threw up his food last night on the bed. Today he still doesn't want to eat all of his breakfast and just had his treats at 12pm that is 10 or so pieces of his dog food. He isn't running around like he had been and I haven't seen too much of the "digging" in his bed like yesterday. Thank you all for your prayers…he is so much better today! |
To me, this doesn't really sound like a pred reaction. Pred is very short acting - it has a half-life of only ONE hour, so that should tell you a lot. I truly think you have something else going on here. As far as the pred, btw, was he on it for allergy itching or ? If so, how is the itching going now? If he has year round itching, you may want to look at Atopica. |
Praying Bentley feels better soon |
dog If you have a derm doc.to take your dog to, go there. I had to take my poodle there and found out she had a food allergy. Gave her venison base food and she got better. Vets are not specialists in skin problems. I hope you can get to the root and not use the pred. |
Yes, the prednisone was for itching. At the very least it worked with that. Bentley was tested for allergies last year and was sent out to Spectrum Labs. He has food allergies and they provided a list of foods for him. He also has environmental allergies for which the lab made a serum for him that I inject monthly. It has worked for him and also his food. The prednisone made him not himself…anxiety, restlessness, panting, digging relentless in his bed…his whole behavior was not him and I do believe from what I have read, his hair loss last June from it. There was no other changes. Thankfully, today he is back to his normal self…a little picky at eating his meals but is eating. I know for me he will not ever get prednisone again. Two episodes is enough…once in June and this last one. To see your boy not himself at all is very upsetting and it is the only thing that was changed for him. I am grateful to have all of your ideas on what could have been going on and for your being there for me and my Bentley. |
I have nothing to add, as I have no experience in Prednisone. Just dropping in to wish the best for your furkid:) Positive thoughts sent your way. Cheers! |
