Hip noises? My little Merry Piper (almost 18 weeks) has developed a clicking or popping sound in her hips at times--I've noticed it when I pick her up or several times when I put her jammies on. She had a bad reaction to a recent vaccination in her hip, but there's no swelling anymore. Could this be a more serious problem? I emailed her breeder, but she had "never heard of it" (<--not sure how much I believe that, but okay). I've only had larger dogs in the past, so I'm more familiar with problems that affect other breeds. And, fortunately, I never experienced hip problems with any of them. |
If it's her hip it could be legg perthes disease which is a degeneration of the ball and socket at the hip joint. If it's actually her leg...it could be luxating patella. Both are common in the breed. |
Thanks for the reply and info--I really hope it's not a degenerative disorder. I guess a vet visit is in order to find out what's going on in there.:( |
It sounds like it could be Perthes if you are feeling it in her hip joints. An x-ray will tell you. This can develope at a very young age and is hereditary. |
From the very beginning with Buster I would hear tiny clicks coming from his joints. To me they sounded just like my body clicks when my bones pop back into alignment. Buster was diagnosed with LP in both his knees and arthritis in his front wrist from bad breeding. I make sure to supplement his diet with glucosamine chondroitin and salmon oil. I would suggest getting Pet insurance before a diagnosis because then it is not a preexisting condition. I went with Petplan. Make sure that the cap for an incident/accident is reset yearly and not a cap for the lifetime for the incident/accident. Best wishes. |
This is sounding ominous for little Piper. And she's also showing symptoms now that could be a trachea issue on top of the potential hip/knee problems. If anyone wants to recommend their Pet Insurance company, I think we will be needing to get some in order to provide proper diligent care for Piper, as well as for our other furbabies. |
