Sick older dog My friend just called with a problem with her Chihuahua. I know this is a Yorkie group but she needs help. Brief description is her Pookie had a dental with several teeth having to be removed. He is 13 years old but except for this is in great health. He is having what the vet calls seizures but has not had this happen at the vet's office only once but is having them all the time at home. She says this dog is not having the normal seizure but is basically rubbing it's face and nose no falling down or loss of conciseness. They live in Elgin Texas. Is there a teaching hospital there or near them. (near Austin)She is real upset they were told they need a MRI done or to put him down. Hope someone can help her here....It's so hard when our furbabies get sick or has problems. Lynne |
There is a veterinary school at the University of Texas at Austin. Hopefully so done there can help her. Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital If I were her, I would video tape the episodes so the doctors can see exactly what is going on rather than relying on a description. |
Did the issues start after the dental? Rubbing face and nose sound more like an allergic reaction. Can she film her dog's seizure to show the specialists. That way they have something to go on rather than just a description. If her Vet only suggested MRI or put to sleep I would definitely consider a second opinion, and the MRI but perhaps it might be better done by a specialist. Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital according to google map directions Texas A& M is only 1 hour and 20 minutes drive from Elgin. Not that far for a thorough evaluation and diagnosis. |
Thanks for such a quick reply. They did take a video and showed it to the vet . I was thinking allergy or something in the mouth may be infected. Her vet's put Pookie on anti seizure meds but no difference so that says to me it's no seizures, he doesn't fall or lose control and is aware of his surroundings during this. That its also seems to happen as a repetition. I said try and wean him off the seizure meds and see what happens she seems to be worried about that as it could or might lead to a real seizure. I think she needs better doctors. I will tell her about Texas A&M medical teaching hospital...I try and keep you in touch about her Pookie |
Is she using SS feed bowls? No plastics.... and soft food after a dental... he may be having food getting stuck (if this is new behavior) |
my jess rubs her face and nose along the ground and runs in circles after we bathe her or give her heartworm or flea meds. It takes a minute or two to stop then she is fine. I think it sounds like either an allergy, or her mouth feels funny to her after the dental. Dogs can be quirky. Esp if things change. Jess did all sorts of weird things when she was crate confined after her leg was broken. That includes not drinking water from a bowl, trying to bury her food with her nose, all sorts of stuff. |
