Anaphylactic Shock - Bug Bites!! Hi All - We've had our little Coco Chanel for five months now. She's almost 8 months old. Now we've had two episodes of very scary bug bite reactions. Yesterday's was particularly frightening --- I always wake up on Saturday morning eager to get my IG (Vixen) and little Coco out for some vigorous exercise. We're lucky to have a high school close by where they can run and play in a completely fenced field. Well, we started out everyone happy and ready to run! When we got to the mid point, Coco sat down and wouldn't move. I picked her up and stood her on her feet so see if she was OK. She raised her right paw and had a confused look on her face. All of a sudden, she went down, collapsed!!! Eyes rolled back, she began to struggle to breathe, her tiny little body went limp. I could feel her hear beating and she was breathing, but had pretty much passed out!!! I ran for both of our lives to the first house I could find and started ringing the bell. I asked for a phone and called my husband to come as fast as he could -- EMERGENCY!! We arrived at the vet just in time. They immediately took her and gave her a shot of benedryl, fluids and some other meds IV at which point she started to come around -- THANK THE LORD!! The problem is that this is the second time this has happened (the first wasn't' nearly as bad, but did require injections and constant monitoring). Is there anything preventative that can be done. It pains me to think Coco won't be able to go out to run anymore, but I REALLY can't stand the thought of EVER having to go through this again. I'm not kidding when I say I've aged quite a few years over the past 24 hours!! ADVICE PLEASE…….????? :( |
Do they have Epipens for dogs? |
Sorry, forgot to say I'm happy CoCo is ok this time!!!! |
what a an epi pen like for a dog?? sorry poster ahead beat me...hehe great minds think alike. ;) does the vet carry such a thing...should you carry benedryl with you?? I hope others chime in with thoughts. welcome to yt and im so glad you were able to save coco...prayers you find a solution other than her not being able to run. another thing with an area like that you cannot monitor all they will encounter....i set up an area that is fenced in with wire so its inexpensive and i can take it down in the winter. i can check the area before each playtime. they dont have a football field but i know they are safe and i stay outside with them the whole time. so that works for me but a suggestion incase you need a more controlled environment. best wishes... |
I've often wondered about the epipen myself...I am scared to death of my boys getting stung by a bee. It happened to my moms dog, which is my older dogs son, and she had to rush him to MSU. Had she not given him a steroid pill before leaving the house, he would have been DOA. I am glad your pup is ok. I wish I knew about a preventative, but I don't. Is it possible to give your pup benadryl before going outside. Of course, this isn't going to be possible if your dog goes potty outside all of the time, but if she uses pee pads and only goes outside to play once a day or something, maybe it would be possible to give her some liquid benedryl before going outside. I'd definitely consult the vet first. I give my boys benedryl for car rides and I give it to them for allergies. Another thing you can try is treating the yard for bugs. I've used Seven Dust on my yard to try to rid it of fleas and I've used a different spray to cut down on the mosquito's....and maybe get a bug zapper or something similar. If there are plants that attract the bugs, maybe do away with those too. I had to move a bunch of hastas because they were attracting bees where Princeton liked to pee. |
Due to yorkies small size, you would need to manually inject epinephrine. Discuss this with your vet. I'm so glad your little one is ok. You would still need to go to the vet as quickly as possible. |
Answered on your other thread. My girl has the same problem. It is very draining to always need to be hyperalert. |
dog I am so glad your little one is ok. Personally I would never take my 2 Yorkies to the dog park. Too many things can happen there. They run the risk of picking up some strange disease from the other dogs. They can get attacked by another aggressive dog. It is just not safe. I hope you can still run your dogs in your yard or some confined safe area. Thank the Lord your precious one is going to be ok. |
omg that would be scared, glad all is ok |
Oh gosh, that must have been so scary! I'm so glad all is ok now and that you have a good plan from your veterinarian! |
what does your vet say, is it like with humans with each sting does the reaction get's worse. The problem with bugs they can be anywhere, not just in parks. We have plenty of bees and other flying insects all over our yard, so it would be hard to protect Lola from all things that fly. If they don't have an epi pen type of thing for dogs, perhaps you can find out the right dose of Benadryl and keep a small bottle of the liquid kind with you, but obviously check with the vet to see how long it would take to work and if that would be Ok. It will be hard to keep your dog in a bubble, because even just out walking on a sidewalk this could happen. Good luck I can't imagine the stress this is causing you. |
Your vet can write a script for an EpiPen... I would insist on having one for her and carry it with her at all times. Maybe some boots/shoes would help.... |
Don't know anything about your problem, sorry, but I feel the need to heads up on the free running too. Especially in large open area. Watch out for Ariel predators, HAWKS. They can swoop down in a second and get your precious fur baby. My Zoey likes to run too. This is what I do. Get two people and have her run back and forth between the two of you, she gets so stoked up she runs like a banshee. Or throw something back and forth. OR get a kid to run with them . They are the only ones who can keep up with them and they love it. And can you stay out of the grass .? We have a huge parking lot at our school nearby.......I leash her though there. I wonder if there are vaccinations for your problem.... Good luck |
Might be a good idea to consider a life-style change for her.... more indoor activities in a controlled environment. One of my dogs has a liver problem, which interferes with her ability to produce antibodies from vaccines... so I treat her as if she not vaccinated. Just a sacrifice we make to keep her healthy. |
