Help with limping pup - have already been to the vet Hi All, I'm new to the forum although have been checking it for advice on my new puppy, Bijou. She is 4.5 months old and had a little accident on Tuesday evening. We didn't see exactly what happened but we think our neighbor stepped on her paw when she was jumping up to greet him - she yelped for a bit and then wouldn't put any weight on her right hind leg after. I took her to the vet on Wednesday because she was still limping and wasn't her normal self. He examined her and said everything appeared to be ok (nothing major broken, knees and hips etc. in place) and to wait a couple of days before doing an x-ray. He gave her a shot for pain and some pain medicine for me. She has improved in that she is fully walking on the back leg and mostly back to her normal self, but when she tries to run she still carries her back leg. Any one else have an experience with a limping pup with no broken bones? How long do they usually limp for? I have enough puppy aspirin to get through the weekend so was going to wait until Monday before heading back to the vet for an x-ray if she's still not better. Just hoping to put my mind at ease that 3+ days of limping after an accident might be normal. Thanks! Nervous new mommy |
I think it's time for an xray. |
It is good that you took her to the vet right away, and I would continue to follow the vet's advice, and xray if it continues. It could be a muscle strain from the jumping, or maybe she jumped and landed wrong. Just another possibility, I'm sure the vet is considering. My Tiki landed wrong when jumping off the bed when she was a little less than a year old. The vet checked her out and didn't feel or see indication of anything broken and said it was a sprain. Tiki continued to limp for another 2 weeks before she put that back foot down. I think even today at 5 years old, she has a tendency to very slightly favor that back leg and I think it even turns outward very slightly. However, it was a minor injury that did not need splinting. Again, your vet knows best. |
BTW to the OP, Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Hope all turns out ok for Bijou. |
Back to the vet for the x-ray! |
Thanks for all of the advice. It's the weekend now (vets closed in Europe) and she is slowly continuing to get better although still limping a bit which sounds like it's normal if it is a sprain or more minor injury. I will minimally call the vet on Monday if she isn't 90%+ better. Thank you! |
