Femoral head surgery Anyone know about Femoral head surgery aka FHO Surgery?? My 10 month old Will needs this surgery! His symptoms were just slightly lifting his right leg when he is standing. Other than that, he acts fine. How common is this? Recovery time? Anyone have experience in this? Thanks! Ginny |
The surgery sounds worse than it is. There are many threads on YT about it. I have had a few pups go through the surgery...two of them are my personal pups. They recovered just fine. I find that they are walking the next day usually...some take a couple of days. It is pretty amazing! :) |
Bless your heart for answering so quickly! William goes in for surgery tomorrow on one of his hips. He has Legg Perthes Disease. The vet said that in 3 months or so, he will have surgery on the other hip. Poor little guy, he will be 10 months old tomorrow. He will get neutered at the same time he has the surgery tomorrow;) |
My 16 year old had it and recovered great. i think it does sound scarier than it is. Good luck to your baby I'm sure he will do great. |

Hi Ginny, thinking of you and William. Please give us an update on his surgery and his progress. Prayers for a successful surgery and quick and full recovery. |
Between my 2 pups, we've had 3 of these surgeries. The first few days can be a little rough, but we found that pain was controlled well with a fentanyl patch for the first 3 days. After the initial few days, both of our guys started using their leg pretty quickly. With P-nut, after a few months, you'd never know he had 2 FHO surgeries, it's a m amazing. We usually walk 3 miled per day and that doesn't phase him. Pickles, who is smaller and more delicate than P-Nut, is taking a little longer to recover (we're 8 wks post surgery with him now), so we may try laser therapy at the vet's. Anyway, it does seem to be a fairly common surgery, but in general, the doggies do very well after and their quality of life is much better. Best wishes to you and your pup! Also, we did P-Nut's 2 surgeries separately, our vet wouldn't do them together. I'm do glad we went that way. |
Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement! Will had FHO surgery 4 weeks ago now and is not making any effort to use his right leg. He seems quite content to hobble around on 3 legs. He seems happy and is back to playing with squeak toys etc. We are going to the vet this Saturday. Perhaps re-hab is in order. Anyone else have this problem after FHO surgery? |
I have not had it happen although one of mine when he runs tends to pick that leg up. These little ones sometimes will do that because it does not bother them to run on three legs. PT might be in order to get him to start using it. Keep us posted and good luck! |

Thanks again everyone for your quick replies! Don't know what I would do without YorkieTalk! I shall keep you guys posted! Will's appointment is at 9;40am Saturday |
Will's vet appointment went well today! The vet says he is healing nicely but we need to do leg stretching exercises with him to stretch out those muscles. Have to do this 3 times a day...Interestingly...his breeder...whom I haven't heard from in a month, sent me an e-mail today offering to replace him. There is no way I would replace my little man! But, at least she acknowledges that there is a problem in her breeding.:p |
Glad the appointment went well. Hope the exercises help! Did you ask the breeder for money! :) She should help pay for that surgery or at least refund his purchase price. |
So glad he is doing ok. |
